People like to work where they are understood and where there are other people with similar backgrounds and interests. Even if your workplace is not hostile toward minorities, it might be a far less appealing place to work than the company across the street that has hired people with a wide range of backgrounds.

And minority turnover can be very expensive. Deloitte and Touche, a Big 5 accounting and consultancy company, discovered that turnover caused by a corporate culture unpleasant to [minorities] was costing them around $5.5 million for every one percent of turnover.
