Can Anyone Build a Better Monster?
Online job boards bring in resumes, but not always
the right ones. Looking to improve the bang-buck ratio, some in-house
recruiters for big companies--IBM, GE, Xerox--are taking matters into
their own hands.

Mark Mehler, co-author
of Career-Xroads, an Internet recruiting guide, says that many employers
don't know where their successful candidates come from. A recent study
of 18 large employers by Mehler and his partner, Gerry Crispin, found
that only 12 could track their hires to the job boards they'd used.
(Of course, someone could see a position on a job board but apply through
the corporate site later.) More surprising, the 12 employers all used
Monster but had hired a total of just 1,980 people from it, less than
2% of the group's total hires. Company Websites supplied almost 13%
of total hires. Niche sites, which can be industry-specific (like Dice),
location-based (like Craigslist), or diversity-oriented (like LatPro),
accounted for 6,381 hires, or 5.2%.
