The American Immigration Lawyers Association (AILA) is a not-for-profit national association of over 10,000 attorneys and law professors who practice and teach immigration law and represent tens of thousands of U.S. families who have applied for permanent residence for their spouses, children, and other close relatives to lawfully enter and reside in the United States.

AILA members also represent U.S. businesses and industries that sponsor highly skilled foreign workers who wish to legally enter and work in the United States in a temporary or permanent basis. In addition, AILA members also represent foreign students, entertainers, athletes, and asylum seekers, often on a pro bono basis.

U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement

The largest branch of the Department of Homeland Security is Immigration and Customs Enforcement. ICE was created by combining the law enforcement arms of what used to be the Immigration and Naturalization Service and the former U.S. Customs Service. The merger took place as part of an effort to more effectively enforce immigration and customs laws and to protect the U.S. against terrorist attacks after 9/11.
