From Baton Rouge to Biloxi, north to Georgia and Arkansas, and west into Texas, state unemployment officials are putting on hip boots to wade into the enormous job of delivering disaster unemployment assistance (DUA) benefits and regular jobless benefits to Hurricane Katrina victims.

Loan program will pump $1B into Hispanic firms
On Sept. 29, U.S. Bank and the U.S. and Arizona Hispanic chambers of commerce will launch a $1 billion national loan program aimed at Hispanic-owned small businesses. The bank is among a growing number of institutions targeting Hispanics with various loan programs and other specialized services.


2005 Hispanic Heritage Awards Honorees Announced
The Hispanic Heritage Foundation (HHF) has announced the 2005 Hispanic Heritage Awards Honorees, recognized for their leadership and the positive impact they have made on the United States.

Executive Appointments

  • Regina Montoya has been hired by The New America Alliance (NAA) as its new Chief Executive Officer. In this capacity, Montoya will develop strategic and tactical plans to fulfill NAA’s mission of promoting the advancement of the American Latino community with a focus on economic and political empowerment.
  • Alfred Ramirez has been named as Interim Executive Director for the National Association of Hispanic Publications, Inc. (NAHP). Mr. Ramirez will lead a national search for new NAHP leadership to drive its advertising sales in Hispanic print media, spearhead initiatives to increase membership, develop, and implement key programs of the NAHP.
  • Al Quintana, has been appointed by Burson-Masteller as chairman of its US Hispanic Practice. Quintana was most recently the VP of Marketing for the subsidiary of Telefonica SA in the United States.

Brazil's Lula Says Scandal Won't Derail Policies
Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva said allegations of corruption within his administration won't lead him to change economic policies that have sparked seven straight quarters of growth.


Peru poorest to receive subsidy
Peru's president has announced that the country's poorest 60,000 families are to receive monthly payments of $30, but critics say bureaucracy and corruption will prevent the money from reaching remote Andean areas.


Bolivia election recalls Cold War era
One top candidate accuses his opponent of being a U.S. pawn. The other accuses his rival of letting Venezuela's leftist President Hugo Chavez run his campaign. Whoever is elected must gain broad support in this country of 8.5 million people, whose populace is disillusioned with politicians.
