Ask the Recruiter: Why aren't more employers viewing my resume?

(from 28 users)

Q: Why aren't more recruiters viewing my resume?

A: If your resume isn't being viewed by recruiters and employers as often as you'd like, the problem could be your Public Resume Title.

Unlike your Private Resume Title (which is only visible to you), your Public Resume Title can be seen by recruiters like myself, and it plays an important part in your overall presentation to employers. Like a good newspaper headline, it should convince me that your "story" is going to be an interesting and worthwhile read. If your Public Title is lackluster, I'm probably not going to take the time to click on your resume for the full story.

You see, when I perform a candidate search on a job board like LatPro, results are displayed as a list of resume titles, similar to the list of job titles you receive from a job search. I'll quickly scan this list for interesting prospects, and your Public Title has only a few seconds to catch my eye and convince me to click on your resume, rather than continuing down the page.

Take a look at your own Public Resume Title. Are you using this space to effectively set yourself apart from other candidates? Does your title persuade recruiters to read your resume and learn more about your skills?

If not, it's never too late to improve your results by improving your Public Resume Title. You should remove any clichés, dramatic punctuation!!, ALL CAPITAL LETTERS and phrases that are meaningless to employers (e.g., "Maria's Resume," "English Version 1," "My CV," etc.). Work on creating a new descriptive title focused on your unique skills, functional experience and/or industry expertise. That's the kind of title that attracts attention!
