Just adding my comment on - Have you ever worked for a jerk?

Submitted by Debra R on Thu, 04/03/2008 - 1:36pm.

Well, I would like to start by saying that my job is a good one. I work for an Oil Company as an administrative assistant. However, having said that, I would like to say my boss is a real jerk. She might even be borderline discriminating. It is obvious and well known by others here at the office, that I am an asset to the company and very much needed. I literally do NOT have anyone I can go to with my concerns about her treatment towards me. I hope that someone who reads this can offer some advise.

I have worked here for a year and she has just hired a new girl and treats her far better. A co worker was the first to tell me, that she felt bad for me and thought I was being discriminated against. She told me the new girl does less work but gets paid more, has paid vacation, I have none, is allowed to be late and take longer lunches, if I did that I would not even have a job. She even has requested days off.

To make matters worse I am the only latin/hispanic person in this office. They do not hire any other race to work in this office- somehow I slipped in and have been here for a year. I was told by the temporary agency recruiter, who sent me here -that this company stressed that job canidates should not be a certain "race". They are all cacausan and plan on keeping it that way. Rummor has it that the new girl wants my job and might just get it because she is the "race" they are looking for.

I am still here because am qualified and can do my job. No one else wants to or knows how to do it. I would love some advise on how to deal with this. This has been going on for the last 3 months now. In the begining she was not so obvious or mean but now it is seen by others, especially now that the new girl is here and wants my position. The boss is thrilled that a white girl wants my job. She has no experince in the field and came to work after not having worked in the last 4 years. I have schooling and work exp. to back me up. There are times that I feel like just leaving but I would be giving my job to this girl who will get it just because she is white. I need this job to provide for my 3 children as I am a single mom and refuse to let the government support me and my children. I hope my comment -well more like letter- gets added so that I may get some positive advise and feedback.Thank you and God Bless.

Regards,

Confused hispanic worker

p.s. - I have been told that the oil field industry has mostly been rich old white men and a few women. I do not hate or discriminate on any race, color, sex, or religion. I do not understand how this office is getting away with this. Their corporate office has no clue as to how this division is being ran. There are only about 15 people here.

pps.
I was sent here through a temp agency but my boss here told me they would hire me direct as soon as they could. We thought at 3 months even my boss's boss asked about me getting hired on for the company. We had to wait because of contract with temp agency. Time has past and at 6 months she looked for anything to change the subject on my direct hire. And so now its been a year, and the new girl is here now.
