Description

Job Description - Provide support to the synthetic chemistry and chemical reactivity efforts of the Homeland Protection business area.

Duties - Synthesize and characterize new molecules, polymers and biomolecules, including the use of Schlenk-line techniques and air-free synthetic methods. Perform metal analysis of unique reactions. Perform reactivity studies. Seek and apply for funding. Prepare reports, scientific publications and proposals. Present results to the external research community.


Requirements

Required - Ph.D. in inorganic or bio-inorganic chemistry with extensive synthetic chemistry experience. 2-3 years experience in inorganic synthesis, and spectroscopic analysis including NMR, fluorescence, FTIR, GC-MS and UV-vis. Extensive experience with 31P NMR is a must. Extensive experience with Schlenk-line techniques and air-free synthetic methods is necessary.

Candidates are expected to be self-motivated and able to work collaboratively in a team environment with scientists and engineers representing a variety of different backgrounds, skill sets, and experience levels. The ability to think independently, work well with others, and present unbiased evaluations of data and other information in technically complex situations is required. Strong technical writing and presentation skills for both scientific and non-scientific personnel are critical. Experience in performing statistical data analysis, and report generation.

Desired - Interdisciplinary experience in the chemistry and detection of chemical warfare agents, toxic industrial chemicals and materials, explosives and explosive related materials is desired.
