Description

Monsanto is seeking a highly motivated individual to join the Trait Field Solutions organization to manage the Soy Conversion and Cotton Trait Characterization (TC) Nursery program at Juana Diaz, Puerto Rico.  This Nursery Lead position will report to the Conversion Center Manager and will have primary responsibility for managing all technical aspects of the Soy Conversion and TC Nursery program at Juana Diaz with direction from the Conversion Center Lead and the Conversion Center Manager.  This role will also receive input from and closely interact with the St. Louis PCA Team, Conversion Breeders and Trait Characterization Scientists.  In addition this role will have people management responsibilities for Research Associates and Assistants and field employees working on the Conversion Center Nursery team. 
 
Responsibilities:
  • Manage communications with the Juana Diaz TC Nursery Team, the Winterville Testing / Greenhouse team,  PGRM, PCA Team, TC Scientists, and Conversion Breeders to coordinate the nursery planning  process, the exchange of germplasm, management of seed inventories, set creation in MIDAS, seed increase and proper isolation and testing protocols. 
  • Conduct Soy conversion project management utilizing the Trait Stacking Manager (TSM) program. 
  • Plan and communicate SRE requests to PCA, TI and MSP Leads.
  • Develop and coordinate planting sampling, pollination, note taking and harvest and seed processing plans and timelines with the TFS and MSP Field Operations teams.   
  • Oversee all Soy and TC conversion nursery sampling and testing (leaf and chip), coordinate lab testing schedule, manage data interpretation and execution of nursery strategies based on data results.
  • Manage shade house activities including process development and establishment of written procedure that results in the production of highly quality seedlings for field transplanting.
  • Coordinate all activities including the management of the firewall testing process for seed hand-offs to Regulatory, PreFoundation, Testing teams, etc.
  • Assure that all work done with transgenic material meets regulatory compliance standards.
  • Train and develop Research Associates, Assistants, full-time field crew members and temporary personnel on the nursery team.
  • Ensure that company assets are well-cared and properly maintained.
  • Commitment meeting site safety requirements as well as foster a safe working environment.
  • Must be able to work long hours in peak time periods.



Requirements

 

Required Skills/Experience:
 
  • MS or BS and a minimum of 3+ years of appropriate work experience within a Plant Breeding environment
  • Familiarity with breeding and research methodologies
  • Knowledge of irrigated crop production
  • Working knowledge of statistics
  • Documented individual leadership and people development skills including excellent organizational and record keeping skills
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills.
  • Computer skills in word processing and spreadsheet programs
  • Ability to work as part of a multi-disciplinary/multicultural research team
  • Ability to balance multiple task and achieve deadlines
  • Ability to function effectively without direct supervision
  Desired Skills/Experience:
  • MS in Agronomy or related field
  • Demonstrated an ability to write and speak fluently in English and Spanish and work in interdisciplinary teams
  • Knowledge of FTS / MIDAS database management.
