This position location is open and covers the following states in the Midwest: MN, WI, MI, IA, IL, IN, OH, KY, WV. The incumbent must live in one of the named states and be willing to travel to the others listed.

The American Diabetes Association (Association), the nation’s leading non-profit health organization providing diabetes research, information, and advocacy, is hiring for the position of Associate Director, State Government Affairs. The Associate Director functions both as a lobbyist to secure legislation and regulation to advance the interests of people with, and at risk for, diabetes, and as an organizer to engage volunteers and local staff to support the Association’s advocacy goals.

Major duties and responsibilities:
* Translate the Association’s advocacy goals and legislative priorities into working plans for each Midwestern state.
* Develop strategies to secure legislation and regulation that meets the Association’s priorities and to oppose proposals deemed harmful to people with diabetes including:
- Monitor legislative and regulatory activity.
- Secure sponsors for legislation.
- Draft bill/regulatory language.
- Prepare and coordinating legislative testimony and fact sheets.
* In collaboration with grassroots advocacy staff, develop and implement media and grassroots campaigns.
* Coordinate state lobby days.
* Select and supervise contract lobbyists.
* Develop relationships with policymakers and their staff.
* Collaborate with agencies, other non-profit organizations, and industry to promote state and local policies in accordance with the Association’s advocacy priorities.
* Organize increased grassroots and grasstops involvement in Association advocacy efforts by working closely with local advocacy volunteers and staff to recruit new advocates, develop advocacy leaders, facilitate communications between local and national advocacy work, and integrate advocacy into all Association events.
* Coordinate local involvement in federal legislative work such as town hall meetings and in-district meeting with Members of Congress.

* Bachelor’s degree
* Minimum 5 years of related work experience including lobbying and/or organizing experience
* Knowledge of state government process and health care policy
* Strong communication, negotiation, and time management skills
* Self initiator
* Located in one of the states listed above at a location with access to a major airport
* Knowledge of diabetes and experience with voluntary heath associations or other non-profit organizations a plus
