Day to Day Work

The scientific writer editor will be responsible for the following activities:

- Serves as the technical editorial and communications advisor to program and uses writing, editing, production management and consulting skills to independently write, edit, or produce technical manuscripts, journal articles, book chapters, abstracts, meeting reports, manuals, Internet materials, programmatic materials and presentations, training aids, and other health communication materials.
- Translate data into program-related documents, Web site materials, and briefings that will influence the programs development.
- Organize program data and systematic review files; perform literature searches on systematic review activities that will promote or enhance this program and prepare slides for presentations.
- Provide analytic support to multi disciplinary teams in order to accomplish public health research and program goals.

Technical Requirements —
The scientific writer editor is required to perform the following elements of work:

Develops, writes, edits, and proofreads Community Guide and CDC information products, including but not limited to abstracts, journal articles, reports, book chapters, manuals, fact sheets, brochures, proposals, directories, instruction books, training curricula, posters, presentation scripts, official correspondence, and slide presentations. Ensures that information products are suitable for electronic and print publication by OSELS/EAPO/Community Guide or for submission to medical, scientific, and public health journal and book publishers. Revises, restructures, and rewrites information products as needed for readability, clarity, and accuracy, as well as for grammatical correctness and in a style suitable to the particular audience for which it is intended. Provides written and verbal feedback to authors and reviewers regarding recommended changes.

Uses computer hardware and software to write, edit, and perform scientific research online. Accesses and operates electronic manuscript-tracking/archival programs and databases in support of clearance and communication activities. Coordinates production of information products among authors, supervisors, reviewers, and senior staff within OSELS/EAPO/Community Guide and CDC-wide.

Prepares materials for professional desktop publishing and communicates with desktop publishers and graphic artists in a manner that ensures appropriate preparation of layout proofs and camera-ready copy for photo reproduction, off-set printing, or electronic publication. Is knowledgeable regarding printing, binding, and distribution processes and is able to suggest appropriate methods for publication.

Understands the necessity for successfully completing assignments on time and prioritizes those assignments to meet or exceed required deadlines. Demonstrates flexibility and changes order of priorities as needed to facilitate completion of assignments, often under tight time constraints.

Protects confidentiality of information products, as appropriate. Is familiar with copyright regulations, publication disclaimers, authorship requirements, conflict-of-interest concerns, and CDC communication and identity policies.

Performs other relevant assignments as assigned.

Works independently, under minimal supervision.

Additional Requirements —
Extensive knowledge and experience in writing or editing scientific manuscripts for publication in peer-reviewed journals is critical.

Education/Experience -
5+ years of technical scientific writing and editing experience

Post Graduate/Masters degree in scientific field, communication, literature or related field. Professional equivalent experience or qualifications will be considered.
