Job Description
Consults with internal customers requesting technical solutions. Maps current processes through direct observation and/or discussion with process key expert. Assesses opportunities for process improvement including step automation and elimination of non-value added steps where possible. Identifies appropriate technologies for use in process automation. Works closely with customers to identify solution requirements. Designs automation solutions which optimize application of existing technologies.

Designs and conducts quality assurance testing to ensure developed solution meets fuctional and performance requirements.

Maintains knowledge of current/available technologies and organizational technology initiatives. Conducts system requirements analysis. Identifies and documents functional and performance requirements from business user input. Conducts technical analysis; translates user requirements to functional specifications. Defines measure of performance and assures their implementation and evaluation. Designs system data model that aligns with global data model. Identifies infrastructure requirements to support proposed system and assures they are in place. Identifies required interfaces with other systems and assures appropriate interfaces are completed and operable. Reviews system/project documentation with team assigned to write code and/or develop system to assure needs are met and/or delegated tasks are carried out appropriately. Facilitates communication between project team and end user. Works with project manager to ensure system is developed and delivered per project plan. Attends to system lifecycle issues assuring that issues/required changes are addressed proactively. Coordinates clinical aspects of application implementation and the collection and dissemination of patient classification information for the Department of Nursing. Coordinates dissemination of classification and staffing data to nursing management in a timely manner. Reviews patient classification reports for trends and problem-solves as needed. Conducts data collection or studies of information relative to patient classification.  Problem solves areas of concern and recommends appropriate changes. Provides guidance to leadership and staff regarding interpretation and analysis of patient classification data. Informs and makes recommendations to leadership regarding new methodologies and tools as they are made available by vendor. Coordinates new methodology implementations. Coordinates implementation of patient classification program for new patient care areas. Participates in planning and execution of software upgrade installations. Identifies and communicates to vendor areas of concern regarding methodologies and software upgrade releases. Coordinates methodology revalidations data collections. Provides nursing support for selected software applications. Demonstrates an in-depth technical knowledge of applications and systems supported. Interfaces with vendors as appropriate in software development and implementation.

Responds to operational problems in a timely manner; identifies alternative solutions and assures problem resolution.

Performs problem determination for supported systems. Identifies software problems and communicates to vendor.  Works with vendor to develop solutions to identified software problems. Demonstrates an in-depth, working knowledge of all components of the Medical Record. Works with staff to identify and rectify nursing specific documentation issues. Leads team in developing procedures for performing standard support functions. Meets with various Nursing Department members to insure an effective documentation process. Assesses and acts on all opportunities to align nursing documentation with data collection.

Maintains patient classification parameters and system controls.

Uses clinical judgment to determine skill mix related to patient type in order to align patient classification matrix parameters with Personnel Budget Worksheets for each patient care unit. Reviews unit and hospital acuities on a regular basis for trends and/or changes and problem solves as needed. Develops written protocols and procedures for the ongoing monitoring of patient acuity and compliance with patient classification guidelines. Determines appropriate number of staff RN monitors needed and recruits and maintains monitor roster. Coordinates orientation of patient classification monitors to the patient classification monitoring process.

Assures consistency of patient classification monitors through regular interrater reliability testing and by providing clarification/continuing education to monitors as needed.

Coordinates activities, assignments, and development of patient classification monitors.  Provides interpersonal communication skill mentoring to monitors as needed. Facilitates patient classification monitor meetings.  Communicates pertinent information, provides direction, and initiates problem solving with monitors as issues are identified.

Works collaboratively with nurse managers, ambulatory nurse supervisors, monitors, and schedulers to ensure all patient care units are monitored on a regular basis.

Reviews patient classification monitoring summaries, collates data, processes monthly patient classification monitoring reports. Coordinates orientation and ongoing education and provides information specific to each assigned patient classification product. Develops orientation materials that provide a basic overview of patient classification and how it is utilized. Coordinates and/or teaches the central orientation classes and ad hoc education for nursing. Orients Department of Nursing management team members to the patient classification process and management reports. Presents at unit staff meetings and/or conducts central inservices/education classes as needed/requested. Functions as a liaison with the patient classification software vendor to obtain information and gain clarification regarding methodology interpretation. Consults proactively and problem solves with RNs, nurse managers, and nurse supervisors regarding appropriate use of patient classification indicators. Educates leadership and staff on new features and enhancements included in software application upgrades.

Basic Qualifications:
Experience : Minimum of two years experience in successful database management, requirements analysis and project management required.  Experience working in healthcare technology required.  Experience in data warehousing and business intelligence required. Education: Bachelor`s degree in nursing required.

License or Certification:
Licensure & Certification: Registered Nurse (RN) license in the state of Minnesota required.

Schedule Details: 0800-1630 Monday thru Friday with occasional early morning or later afternoon and evening meetings and commitments.
Weekend Schedule: May require occasional work on weekends.
