The Certified Lead Ophthalmology Technician acts as an extended resource to the Clinical Supervisor for the oversight of clinical staff and patient care processes. This position is also accountable for coordination of patient flow, daily assignments of support staff, ensures that all QI measures are being met, sees that all patient testing is appropriately performed and documented, and provides direct patient care by providing technical and clinical functions in addition to Lead duties.
Essential Functions:
- Oversees support staff working in both Ophthalmology and Optometry departments.
- Prepares daily assignments, instructs, and checks on the work of other support staff within the department.
- Ensures support staff perform required daily QI measures.
- Provides feedback on performance to develop support staff members.
- Serve as a role model for support staff through demonstration of clinical expertise.
- Initiate clinic maintenance activities such as evaluating supply inventory, assessing equipment.
- Preceptor of all new technicians, providing training on new equipment and patient care services.
- Conducts skill evaluation for all new technicians and determine training path.
- Responsible for the resource scheduling for all patient visits.
- Provides direct and indirect patient care associated with physician office visit.
- Assist provider in the examination and treatment of ophthalmology patients. This assistance includes, but is not limited to the following:
- Examine records and forms, and prepares patients for current exam and treatments.
- Prepare appropriate equipment and instruments for surgery and follow-up care.
- Assists Ophthalmologist by performing technical tests and records results for procedures for the ophthalmologist's analysis and interpretation.
- Assist in refractive/diagnostic procedures to include manual manifest refractions, auto-refractometry, corneal topography, pachymetry, keratometry, ocular photography, and visual fields and papillary reflex testing.
- Conducts vision screening tests to include, but not limited to, the following:
- Visual acuity, color vision, tonometry, visual fields, pupil exams, and other technical tests required by the ophthalmologist.
- Record data of above tests and determines need for further evaluation.
- Prepare procedure room.
- Assist ophthalmologist with clinical procedures and performs as special assistant, using procedures pertaining to all types ophthalmologic surgeries.
- Prepare patients for and performs general preparation of pre-operative patients. Provide post-operative instructions as directed by the physician.
- Assist provider in contact lens cleaning, dispensing, insertion/removal, and patient instruction. Prepare and fit patients with special optometric devices as instructed by the provider. Instruct patients in correct care, hygiene post-procedurally.
- Order and maintain ophthalmologic medications and supplies.
- Complete daily, weekly, and monthly Quality Initiatives for the department.
- Other duties as assigned.
