Position assists the Senior Vice President, Legal Department, in the management, coordination and oversight of financial and strategic activities for the Department, including management of the relationships with outside counsel law firms and vendors. Provides objective, thoughtful information and counsel regarding all aspects of the Department's finances, and provides consultation, analysis and leadership on key Departmental initiatives. The position reports to the SVP Legal Dept.

Essential Functions:
  • With Legal Department management, develops, analyzes and implements a strategy for management of outside counsel relationships with approximately 225 law firms and vendors and outside counsel costs , including negotiation of alternative fee arrangements and charge backs to regional business operations.
  • Develops, manages and monitors the National Legal Department Budget and non-medical malpractice indemnity reserves. Responsible for quarterly reporting of indemnity expenditures to the regions, centralized through the National Controller's Office.
  • Is responsible for budget system completion.
  • Prepares complex financial trend and data analysis reports.
  • Is accountable for the coordination, compilation and distribution of financial data to legal department management, regional financial managers and regional counsel.
  • Performs financial analysis upon identification of variances and prepares summary of key findings.
  • Provides leadership, consultation and analysis regarding Department performance, key initiatives and strategic opportunities.
  • Responsible for IT and knowledge management planning, including ongoing assessment of current and future state, implementation of initiatives based upon identified business needs, such as paperless business operations.
  • Facilitates committees and task forces and may lead or oversee Department projects related to IT, legal operations and administration.
  • Supervises department invoice processing staff.
  • Oversees the law library budget and subscription contracts of up to $350 thousand dollars annually, and supervises the law library staff.



Requirements

Basic Qualifications:
  • Minimum: Five (5) plus years work experience in consulting, operations or project management, preferably in a health care setting.
  • Preferred: Seven (7) plus years in consulting operations or project management experience; two (2) to four (4) years of management.
  • Four (4) year degree in related field or equivalent experience.
  • 3 years experience as a business manager in a corporate legal department required.
  • Substantial experience as a financial analyst. General application of financial analysis concepts and principles.
  • Full use and application of standard financial analysis principles, theories, concepts and techniques.
  • Advanced proficiency in PC based word processing and spreadsheet applications (Excel) including advanced functions such as graphics, pivot tables, macros and database management required.
  • Proficiency with Business Objects/TM1 software, PeopleSoft software.
  • Working knowledge of accounting rules and practices, financial analysis policies, practices and systems required.
  • Able to formulate study designs and conduct analysis.
  • Working knowledge of SOX regulations required.
  • Superior communication, consulting, facilitation, negotiation, conflict management, problem resolution, change management skills and consensus building skills.
  • Superior leadership and project management skills. Demonstrated ability to bring projects/initiatives to completion.
  • Frequent use and general knowledge of industry practices, techniques and standards.
  • Superior written and oral communication and presentation skills required.
  • Excellent consulting, facilitation, negotiation, conflict management, problem resolution, change management and consensus building skills.
  • Ability to adapt to constantly changing priorities in managing a wide range of projects.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Ability to navigate network environment (accessing servers, using modems, e-mail, developing electronic databases) and Project Management software desirable.
  • IT and knowledge management a plus.
  • Master's degree preferred.
