Job Description
SUMMARY Applies considerable experience to produce high quality wine and influences the full spectrum of winemaking processes, from growing grapes (raw materials stage) through delivery to the consumer.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS •Oversees winemaking at one or more winery location(s) (Modesto, Livingston, Fresno) including wine production and processing equipment operations to ensure the highest standards are maintained, operations are profitable, and risk is minimized. •Influences quality targets of multiple blends across the range of brands and wine varieties within the department. •Actively participates in the wine tasting process and is responsible for the attainment of wine flavor profiles which meet marketing needs. •Addresses supply/demand issues to help assure out of stock occurrences are minimized and the winery inventory is balanced. •Responsible for the cellar process management of grapes, juices and wines including chemical and ingredient additions, racks, transfers, clarification, blends, shipping and final preparation for bottling. •Manages supplies and ingredients, including pre-harvest winemaking supplies, all wine additives and Fining agents. •Influences harvest decisions in the grapes received, crushing, pressing, fermentation process and the viticulture practices. •Maintains wines within internal “gold standard” specifications from grape to bottle. •Contributes to the grape streaming process, (forecasting, anticipating possible options/impacts of decisions/judgments) chosen at any and all stages of the winemaking process. •Works with management to develop business objectives and drive continuous improvement. •Initiates and develops the trials and experiments and for the completion of their success. •Interfaces with other resources/departments of the organization in order to ensure successful (productive, high quality and profitable) completion of winemaking processes. •Conducts presentations for internal and external customers. •Participates on cross-functional continuous improvement teams for winemaking processes and procedures. •Must maintain satisfactory attendance, to include timeliness. •Responsible for understanding and complying with applicable quality, environmental and safety regulatory considerations. •If accountable for the work of others, responsible for ensuring their understanding and compliance. •This job description reflects management's assignment of essential functions; it does not prescribe or restrict the tasks that may be assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS •High school diploma or GED. •Bachelor's degree in Enology, Winemaking, Viticulture, Fermentation science, Plant Science, Food science, Biology, Chemistry, Microbiology, Biological Engineering or Chemical Engineering, plus 5 years Enology, Winemaking, Viticulture or Chemistry experience with increasing levels of responsibility; or 12 years of Enology, Winemaking, Viticulture or Chemistry experience with increasing levels of responsibility. •Required to possess a valid driver’s license and clean driving record. •Required to lift and move equipment weighing up to 35 pounds. •Required to possess the vision necessary to judge wine and brandy color. •Computer skills requirements include: basic MS Word and Excel. •Skilled in reading, analyzing and interpreting the most complex documents. •Skilled in responding effectively to the most sensitive inquiries or complaints. •Skilled in writing speeches and articles using original or innovative techniques or style. •Skilled in presenting effective and persuasive speeches and presentations on controversial or complex topics to top management, public groups and boards of directors. •Skilled in applying mathematical operations to such tasks as frequency distribution, determination of test reliability and validity, analysis of variance, correlation techniques, sampling theory and factor analysis.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS •Bachelor’s degree in Biology, Chemistry, Enology, Fermentation Science, Food Science or Microbiology plus 7 years of winemaking experience with increasing levels of responsibility. •Computer skill requirements include: intermediate MS Word, Excel, Access, and PowerPoint. •Skilled in applying advanced mathematical concepts such as exponents, logarithms, quadratic equations, and permutations. •Skilled in applying principles of logical or scientific thinking to a wide range of intellectual and practical problems. •Experience in working with nonverbal symbolism (formulas, scientific equations, graphs, musical notes, etc.,) in its most difficult phases. •Experience in working with a variety of abstract and concrete variables. •Experience with working under different climatic conditions. •Strong leadership qualities. •Experience with operating with substantial latitude for un-reviewed action or decision. •Experience with managing work scheduling and prioritizing. •Strong knowledge of viticulture. •Experience with production winegrowing from grape to bottle, including but not limited to process control, production processing, work scheduling and prioritizing and government regulations. •Strong working knowledge of all-winemaking equipment, processes and procedures at assigned location(s). •Comprehensive knowledge of and experience with applying principles, practices and procedures of this particular field of specialization to the completion of difficult assignments.
