Job Description
SUMMARY Works from specifications to participate in designing, developing, testing and modifying computer hardware and peripheral equipment, and implementing software operating systems.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS •Performs operating system upgrades, applies system PTFs, performs third-party application installations and upgrades, and works part-time in Computer Operations. •Acquires general understanding of business areas to determine specific business requirements. •Analyzes basic to moderate systems and software requirements to determine feasibility of design. •Installs and monitors software systems, hardware and peripherals to ensure operation in accordance with specifications. •Participates in formulating and designing software operating systems using scientific analysis and mathematical models to predict and measure outcome and consequences of design. •Participates in plan layouts of new or modified computers and peripheral equipment. •Participates in developing training manuals in the use of new or modified equipment, operating systems and software. •Confers with customer/users regarding network, operating system and software maintenance. •Applies current technology or researches and acquires new technical knowledge to complete assigned projects and resolve issues. •Maintains satisfactory attendance, to include timeliness. •Responsible for understanding and complying with applicable quality, environmental and safety regulatory considerations. QUALIFICATIONS To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS •High school diploma or GED. •Bachelor's degree in computer science, business administration, MIS, mathematics or engineering; or 4 years of IBM System i (AS/400) operations reflecting increasing levels of responsibility. •General concepts of IBM System i (AS/400) system backups. •General knowledge of basic CL commands. •General knowledge of using system logs, message queues, and job queues. •Required to work a Tuesday through Saturday schedule, be flexible to work on off days, and participate in an on-call rotation. •Required to work on holidays and other shifts to provide coverage in Computer Operations when necessary.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS •Bachelor's degree in computer science, business administration, MIS, mathematics or engineering plus 2 years experience with IBM System i (AS/400) operations reflecting increasing levels of responsibility. •High availability software experience (Mimix). •Job scheduling software experience (Advanced Job Scheduler). •Skilled in reading, analyzing and interpreting general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures or governmental regulations. •Skilled in writing reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals. •Skilled in effectively presenting information and responding to questions from groups of managers, clients, customers and the general public. •Computer skill requirements include: intermediate MS Word, Excel, Access and PowerPoint. •Skilled in working with mathematical concepts such as probability and statistical inference, and fundamentals of plane and solid geometry and trigonometry. •Skilled in applying concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios and proportions to practical situations. •Skilled in solving practical problems and dealing with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. •Skilled in interpreting a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form. •Skilled in following established procedures to perform tasks that are routine in nature, requiring some evaluation, originality or ingenuity.
