Under direct supervision, staffs the Language Resource Center line for Spanish speaking callers. Ability to perform the following duties using bilingual (Spanish) capabilities for interpretation. Interprets for Spanish-speaking Health Plan members who call w/ a variety of telephone inquiries regarding benefit coverage, policies, procedures & services. Interprets for Spanish-speaking callers needing to schedule an appointment, and/or seeking medical advice. Maintains & supports a culture of compliance, ethics & integrity. Maintains knowledge of policies & procedures & performs in accordance w/ the Principles & Responsibilities & applicable regulatory requirements, external laws & accreditation standards. Appropriately reports observed fraud or abuse.

Essential Functions:
- Receives incoming phone calls from Spanish-speaking members, determines reason for call & transfers calls to & interprets for Call Center staff in scheduling appointments for medical services; cancels appointments at the request of patients; obtains information for Member Services issues & transfers calls to appropriate personnel & interprets according to protocol
- May interpret for members & providers of care during medical appointments via phone
- May serve as on-site Spanish interpreter at a medical office
- Translates written medical information into Spanish as necessary for quality patient care; translates written patient information into Spanish as necessary for quality patient care; translates written patient information documents into Spanish according to protocol
- Serves as a resource for acquiring language assistance for all non-English speaking members for the Region
- Adheres to Code of Ethics for Medical Interpreter/Translator
- ENVIRONMENTAL FACTORS May sit for prolonged periods of time
- Call center environment



Requirements

Basic Qualifications:
- 1 year experience as a medical interpreter/translator in Spanish/English
- Broad knowledge of both languages & cultures; excellent oral & written command of English & Spanish
- Extensive knowledge of medical terminology in English & Spanish
- 2 years of college courses or equivalent experience in the health care field
- Must possess excellent member service skills & professional phone manner in order to provide quality member service by answering a wide variety of questions from members, hospitals, outside providers, & physicians
- General knowledge of terminology related to insurance systems, such as Workers' Compensation, Medicare, & Coordination of Benefits
- In alignment w/ US Department of Health & Human Services - Office of Minority Health's Culturally & Linguistically Appropriate Service (CLAS) standards in health care, must pass a Spanish Language Proficiency Assessment for the Medical Interpreter


Preferred Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree preferred

National Certification for Health Care Interpreters
