Under general supervision of Orthopedic Supervisor and/or departmental physicians, provides functional guidance to assigned staff by training new employees, adjusting work schedules, directing work flows, resolving non-routine problems & assisting supervisor in various additional administrative matters such as developing & revising departmental procedures.
Essential Functions:
- Trains & orients Junior Orthopedic Technicians & newly hired Orthopedic Technicians to assist the physicians w/ all routine orthopedic procedures & to meet standards of job description, instructs medical students & residents in plastic techniques & teaches advanced plaster techniques for Orthopedic Residency Program
- Adjusts work schedules & directs work flows of assigned staff in the application of orthopedic technique & procedures
- Coordinates activities of the cast room w/ other clinic & hospital functions
- Acts as resource person for non-department personnel in the care of orthopedic patients & use of traction equipment in accordance w/ department policies
- May assist physician in coordination of education programs
- Recommends re-order points for replenishment of rotating standard stock & non-stock cast room supplies
- Signs & forwards purchase requisitions to department head, evaluates necessity for acquisition of new or additional equipment for the department
- Recommends purchase of capital equipment
- Evaluates new items such as plaster & ready-made braces to ensure compliance w/ pre-determined standard
- Applies all type of casts, splints, braces, bandages, & slings by determining proper positioning, angulations & type of device according to the instruction of the physician & pre-determined orthopedic procedures & techniques
- Attends to patients during follow-up visits by checking casts, splints, etc
- Attends for sure such conditions as comfort & circulation problems, trimming, removing & reapplying casts, splints, etc, as ordered by physician
- Sets up traction apparatus as directed, noting type of traction, positioning & weight to be used, checks condition of inpatients on a regular basis to determine possible problems, notifies physician as necessary & makes adjustments as directed
- Assists physician in Operating Room in application of casts as directed
- Assists physician in Emergency Room & Cast Room w/ procedures such as closed reduction fractures, wound debridement & pin insertion, applies casts as directed, positions & preps patient, assembles necessary equipment & instruments, applies proper dressing as directed, passes instruments & assists physician as directed, & observes sterile technique for operating room procedures
- Furnishes, fits & instructs patients in the use of crutches, canes, & other devices, documents charges on standard form
- Maintains & ensures operational readiness of equipment & supplies
- Maintains clean & orderly ward area according to established procedures
- Performs other related duties as required such as assisting physician in specific phases of patient care
- Promotes, ensures, & improves customer service to internal/external customers by demonstrating skills which are consistent w/ the organization's philosophy of providing extraordinary customer relations & quality service

Requirements |
Basic Qualifications:
- Bilingual (English/Spanish) Level II required.
- One year Kaiser Permanente experience as an Ortho Tech II preferred
- NBCOT certification required.
- Must take and pass department skills validation for competencies as established.
- Knowledge of orthopedic terminology and procedures required.
- Ability to work in operating room settings.
Notes:
- Must successfully pass or have passed the bilingual test (within the last 12 months), or be active in the QBS program.
- Ability to take call on weekends.
- Will float between Riverside campus and Moreno Valley MOB II.
