Description

Climate Impacts Campaign
Cambridge, MA or Washington, DC

The Position

The Union of Concerned Scientists (UCS) is an independent national nonprofit whose scientists and engineers work to solve some of our planet's most pressing environmental and safety problems. UCS combines technical analysis and effective organizing and advocacy to create innovative, practical solutions for stemming the tide of global warming, sustainable food policy and agriculture, energy and transportation, fighting misinformation and reducing the threat of catastrophic nuclear war.

UCS's Climate Impacts Campaign seeks to move the public and federal lawmakers towards strong, swift action on climate change, through focusing on those climate change impacts we are already experiencing, such as extreme heat and precipitation, wildfires, and sea level rise. As Senior Outreach Coordinator, you will work with a creative, dedicated, and multi-disciplinary team of scientists, analysts, communications experts, and campaign organizers to mobilize diverse constituencies for federal action to reduce carbon emissions and to prepare for  the impacts of climate change .

Responsibilities include:

  • Lead efforts to mobilize scientists, experts, elected officials, business, faith, and military leaders and others.
  • Develop, and implement outreach plans associated with major new UCS products.
  • Develop and manage projects to advance national and state-based climate initiatives, achieve political strategy goals, and contribute to overall campaign outcomes.
  • As part of a cross-program team, help develop and implement our Spanish-language communications and outreach strategy.
  • Identify and raise the profile of communities taking action to prepare for climate changewith special attention to the equity dimensions of climate change adaptation in particular for working class communities and communities of color, including Latino/Hispanic, African American, and Tribal communities.
  • Maintain competency in issue areas and outreach expertise.
  • Represent UCS at public events, conferences, and to members.

Qualifications and experience

  • Five to seven years of comparable and relevant experience in both outreach and advocacy is required.
  • Extensive knowledge of and experience in effective climate and energy campaigning. Familiarity with climate mitigation and preparedness policies is preferred.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently, balance a multitude of tasks, be a self-starter, and collaborate as a member of a multidisciplinary team.
  • Strong communication and public speaking skills are required, as well as proven ability to write for a variety of audiences.
  • Must have experience in coalition-building and management, as well as experience with grassroots organizing and member recruitment (including online activism and marketing), social media, and media relations.
  • Experience with campaign planning and strategy development is required, as is demonstrated success working with coalitions and/or professional associations.
  • Solid understanding of database maintenance, on-line organizing tools, online research, and Microsoft Office a must.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage multiple projects for extended periods of time, and to be flexible under fast-changing campaign conditions.
  • Background in climate, energy, or environmental sciences is required.
  • Bilingual Spanish/English required.
  • Bachelor's degree required.

May spend extended periods at computer. May occasionally lift boxes of materials (less than 70 lbs.). Significant travel (10 or more overnights per year) is required. Regular office hours may include nights and weekends.

At UCS, comparable training and/or experience can be substituted for degrees when appropriate.

UCS is an equal opportunity employer continually seeking to diversify its staff. In particular, we're dedicated to broadening opportunities for individuals from demographic groups that are historically underrepresented in the sciences and in environmental advocacy. We're also committed to building an inclusive workplace culture where talented people of widely diverse backgrounds can thrive.  We've adopted this commitment because we believe the inclusion of culturally diverse perspectives will improve our work and produce better societal and environmental outcomes for all, including historically disenfranchised communities. We are actively seeking people who bring diverse backgrounds and perspectives to join us in this work.

Compensation, Hours and Location: This is a full-time position based either in UCS's Cambridge, MA or Washington, DC office. For those who meet all position requirements, the salary is around $59,000. UCS offers excellent benefits and a rewarding work environment.
