Network Support Specialist

Department: Information Technology

  • Function:

    Responsible for assisting Network Manager in providing Tier/Level 3 technical support to the College’s local and wide area networks consisting of a virtualized environment supporting MS Windows servers, SQL, SharePoint, Active Directory, Exchange, Blackboard course management system, and various web services.  Administer support of enterprise-class switching, load balancing and firewall solutions across WAN including connectivity to 1,300+ endpoints. 

    Organization Relationship:

    Position works closely with the Network Manager and reports to the Dean of Information Technology, who reports to the Vice President of Administrative Services, who reports to the President of the College.

    Required Qualifications:

    Associate degree required, Bachelor’s Degree in Information Technology/related field preferred; and three years technical experience supporting an enterprise network.  Hands-on experience in supporting a virtual server environment using VMware ESX and vSphere a must.

    A willingness to obtain CCNA Cisco certification within one year of hire.

    Ability to work collaboratively in team environment and possess a high level of self-motivation and direction.

    Possess strong organizational skills and ability to manage multiple concurrent priorities with a keen attention to detail. 

    Strong technical skills to resolve problems related to hardware, operating systems, and configuration issues through troubleshooting, repair and research.

    Skilled in analyzing network problems, performance of fault isolation, problem resolution and service restoration.

    Ability to assess networking needs by conferring with users; analyzing workflow, information access, and security requirements.    Recommend both short and long-term solutions using the latest technology.

    Hands-on experience and in-depth knowledge of communications components, LAN/WAN infrastructures and system architectures in order to develop and maintain real-time solutions, including but not limited to the following:

    Assist with maintaining the College core telecommunications infrastructure, and providing high-level technical support for the College’s technology initiatives.Essential Functions:

    Provide highly technical, hands-on management of network routers, switches, firewalls, servers and all network related devices to ensure optimal performance of LAN/WAN. 

    Assist with design, install, and administer Windows servers, storage systems, and related components to support various business applications, instructional, and student services.

    Provide comprehensive documentation of systems, processes and troubleshooting resolutions.

    Assist with managing Active Directory for organization unit structure, delegation of administration, group policy, and user, group and computer account strategies.

    Ensure network infrastructure is PCI compliant.

    Maintain and support staff and student email systems using Exchange and Live@edu.

    Maintain network performance by performing network monitoring, analysis, performance tuning, and troubleshooting.

    Monitor routine operations of IT Department to ensure efficiency and effective use of available resources by adhering to industry standards, best practices and guidelines.

    Provide guidance to other members of the IT support team by determining best practices, resolutions to complex issues, and knowledge transfer.

    Maintain and evaluate network performance issues including availability, utilization, throughput, and latency; planning and executing the selection, installation, configuration, and testing of equipment; defining network policies and procedures; establishing connections and firewalls.

    Maintain network security through access controls, monitoring, evaluation, and continued documentation.

    Implement server upgrades, maintenance fixes, and vendor-supplied patches.

    Design, test, and implement new technology initiatives.

    Conduct research on server hardware, software, and protocols in support of procurement and development efforts. 

    Participate in long and short term planning strategy including resource and budget projections.

    Responsible for assisting/coordinating/directing College fund raising initiatives and projects and to support the work of the KC Foundation as assigned.  Participation and supporting fund raising activities is an expectation of this position.

    Participation at college events and activities throughout the year is an expectation of this position.  Further, College personnel are encouraged, as a member of the KC family, to support the many organizations within the institution serving our students and the district.

    Physical Demands and Work Environment

    Duties are performed in a fast-paced environment, with frequent deadlines, distractions and interruptions.  Employee must be able to work and maneuver in tight physical spaces and have appropriate mobility level for installing and repairing hardware and software in tight physical spaces, as well as being able to stoop and crawl as necessary for performing duties.  Employee must be able to lift up to fifty (50) pounds.  Travel throughout KC District is required.  Flexible schedule, including evenings, weekends, and on-call required.
