Employment Opportunities- Summer 2019
Please read this entire announcement before submitting your application. This application is specific to the program area described in the following paragraph. If you are interested in other camp program areas, you must apply for that position as well.
Opportunities for temporary summer employment with the Arlington County Department of Parks and Recreation include work as Camp Directors, Assistant Directors, and support staff in camp programs throughout the County. Camp runs from June 24th to August 30th. Training and planning begins late May through June, which includes some evenings and Saturdays. Staff must be available for the entire summer.
The Office for Teenagers offers 5 Junior Jam camps at five locations in Arlington for ages 11-16 from June 24th thru August 16th; (25-30 hours per week)
Summer Adventure program located at one of Arlington's middle or high school for ages 10-14 sessions 2-8; (40 hours per week)
Summertime Thrills at Washington Lee HS for ages 10-14 sessions 1, 7, 8 and 9 and Gunston CC for sessions 8 and 9. (40 hours per week)
Power of Wellness Camp at Gunston CC/Fairlington CC will be for ages 11-15 sessions 4, 5 and 6 and ages 7-10 sessions 9 and 10. This camp will focus on all aspects of wellness and will include 2 field trips each week. (40 hours per week)
TEAM-Seeking Camp Staff ages 15-18 that have completed the two-week TEAM training.
The director position will be responsible for the overall planning and implementing of activities for middle and HS age participants.
STUDENT ASSISTANT I/II (SAI/II) - $7.33-$8.89/Hour
Responsible for assisting all leaders in the summer camp or program activities and operations. These individuals are either non-high school graduates (SA I) or high school graduates enrolled in post-high school level education programs who have not accumulated at least 3 months of relevant experience (SA II). Applicants must be at least 16 years old to be hired for licensed preschool camp, all other camps require the applicant be at least 15 years old. Applications for Student Assistant positions will only be considered from individuals who have previously volunteered in one or more of our summer camps.
SUMMER RECREATION ASSISTANT I - $13.13/Hour
Responsible for assisting with the leading of recreation activities and behavior management of participants for a summer camp. Assist in camp or program operations. Minimum requirements: Completion of requirements for graduation from high school or GED equivalent, plus three months experience in administering recreational programs. CPR and First Aid Certification is desirable for applicants hired at this level.
SUMMER RECREATION ASSISTANT II - $13.97/Hour
Responsible for assisting in the planning, leading, and conducting of recreation activities for a camp, behavior management of participants, and assisting in the evaluations of the activities and the participants. Minimum requirements: Completion of requirements for graduation from high school or GED equivalent, plus six months experience in administering recreational programs or facility monitoring. Certification in CPR and First Aid is required for all applicants hired at this level.
RECREATION ASSISTANT III - $15.75/Hour
Responsible for planning, leading, and conducting recreation activities for a summer camp. Responsible for completing participant and program evaluations. Performs related supervisory and administrative duties. Minimum requirements: Completion of requirements for graduation from high school or GED equivalent, plus one-year experience (equivalent of 4 summers) in administering recreation programs. Certification in CPR and First Aid is required for all applicants hired at this level.
RECREATION ASSISTANT IV - $18.97/Hour
Responsible for directing a summer camp with responsibility for all rooms in that program. Performs supervisory and administrative duties. Minimum requirements: Completion of the requirements for graduation from an accredited college or university with a degree in leisure or recreational studies, special education or a related field, plus one-year experience (equivalent of 4 summers) in administrating recreation programs. Certification in CPR and First Aid is required for all applicants hired at this level. If you are hired as a Preschool Camp Director, you must be 21 years old at time of employment.

The successful candidate will have good character and integrity, positive communication skills, reliable transportation, the ability to complete tasks as assigned, take the initiative when needed, and the ability to work successfully in a team environment. If selected, all summer staff will be required to:
- Agree to a criminal background check.
- Candidates will be asked to provide two letters of reference from related work/school experience prior to an offer of employment. Letters of reference may be attached to this application.
- Provide negative TB results or submit to a TB screening.
- Attend all required trainings.
- Some positions require a valid motorized vehicle operator's license and driving history record check.
- Some positions require First Aid/CPR certification.
- Be open to provide personal care as needed to campers (training provided).
Work Hours: These positions vary in days and hours of work, from a few hours per week to a full forty (40) hours per week schedule.

Summer camp positions will remain open until filled. We hope to have all camp jobs filled by May 11, 2019 .

Please note interviews will be conducted on a continuous basis and applicants are encouraged to submit their applications as soon as possible. Written notification will be sent to those applicants who applied but were not hired, once all positions are filled. Generally, these letters are sent out in mid-July.

Permanent, Full-Time Appointments
All jobs are permanent, full-time appointments unless otherwise stated in the announcement. The following benefits are available:
Paid Leave : Vacation leave is earned at the rate of four hours biweekly. Leave accrual increases every three years until eight hours of leave are earned biweekly for twelve or more years of service. Sick leave is earned at the rate of four hours biweekly. There are eleven paid holidays each year.
Health and Dental Insurance : Three group health insurance plans are offered - a network open access plan, a point-of-service plan, and a health maintenance organization. A group dental insurance plan is also offered. The County pays a significant portion of the premium for these plans for employees and their dependents. A discount vision plan is provided for eye care needs.
Life Insurance : A group term policy of basic life insurance is provided at no cost to employees. The benefit is one times annual salary. Additional life insurance is available with rates based on the employee's age and smoker/non-smoker status.
Retirement : The County offers three vehicles to help you prepare for retirement: a defined benefit plan, a defined contribution plan (401(a)), and a deferred compensation plan (457). The defined benefit plan provides a monthly retirement benefit based on your final average salary and years of service with the County. You contribute a portion of your salary on a pre-tax basis to this plan. General employees contribute 4% of pay; uniformed public safety employees contribute 7.5% of pay. Employees become vested in the plan at five years of service. The County also contributes to this plan.
For general employees, the County also contributes 4.2% of pay to a defined contribution plan (401(a)) . The County also matches your 457 contribution, up to $20 per pay period, in this plan. The 457 deferred compensation plan allows you to set aside money on either a pre-tax (457b) or post-tax (457 Roth) basis up to the IRS annual limit. New employees are automatically enrolled with a pre-tax contribution equal to 2% of your base pay.
Other Benefits: The County also offers health, dependent care, and parking flexible spending accounts; long-term care insurance; tuition assistance; transit and walk/bike to work subsidies; a college savings plan; wellness programs; training opportunities; and a variety of other employee benefits.
Permanent, Part-Time Appointments:
Part time employees who work ten or more hours per week receive paid leave and benefits in proportion to the number of hours worked per week.
Limited Term Appointments:
Benefits are the same as permanent appointments except that the employees do not achieve permanent status.
Temporary Regular Appointments:
Temporary regular employees who work 30 hours or more per week are eligible for health, dental, and basic life insurance as described above. They are also eligible for vacation, sick leave, and paid holidays.
Temporary Seasonal and Occasional Appointments:
Temporary employees who work on a seasonal basis or variable hours receive sick leave, but do not normally receive other paid leave or benefits. Exceptions are noted in individual announcements.
