Description

For more than 45 years, Buckelew Programs has been committed to the mission of providing mental health and addiction services that promote recovery, resilience and hope. The agency provides numerous essential community services throughout Marin, Sonoma and Napa counties ranging from supported housing and job training for people with mental illness to outpatient psychotherapy and other support for children, adults and families, as well as residential detoxification services, and a regional suicide prevention program and crisis hotline.

The Homeless Outreach Clinician will perform clinical assessments for English and Spanish speaking individuals for submission to the Marin County Behavioral Health and Recovery Services (BHRS) Access Team supervisor. The target population being assessed is homeless, or at immediate risk of homelessness, who potentially have a severe mental illness, including those with co-occurring disorders and who are not already engaged with BHRS. These individuals may be in institutions, hospitals, shelters, vehicles, and/or on the streets.

Responsibilities:

  • Shadow current providers and conduct street outreach in homeless encampments and other locations where homeless members of our community reside utilizing agency established procedures designed to insure employee safety.
  • Using the BHRS assessment tool, perform assessments for individuals at various locations in Marin County as well as out of county institutions (e.g. hospitals) where Marin citizens are placed. 
  • When an individual is found eligible for specialty mental health services, clinician will provide referrals/placement(s) for both mental health and/or substance use services. 
  • Assist people who have been assessed for services make it to their first and second BHRS appointments.
  • Provide resources and linkages to other services.
  • Participate in at least four hours of cultural competency training per year as well as be trained in and utilize other best practices, including housing first, motivational interviewing, co-occurring disorders, and non-violent crisis intervention.
  • Participate in team meetings and other program meetings as requested by Program Director. Meet regularly with immediate supervisor. 

Status: This position is non-exempt, full-time (40+ hours weekly) with typical working hours of 10 AM – 6 PM. The schedule typically is Monday through Friday; however, flexibility may be necessary to meet job expectations. On-call duties are rotated between Program Director and direct reports. 



Requirements

Education and Experience: Must be a Licensed or pre-licensed MFT, LCSW, or equivalent licensed practitioner of the healing arts. Education and experience consistent with establishing and maintaining active licensure, with two years licensed experience strongly preferred. Experience with assessments, evidence-based practices, treatment modalities, and trauma informed practices. Experience in clinical and psychoeducational training. Experience with homeless population preferred.

Professional: Must be fluent in English and Spanish, both writing and speaking. Ability to work in an independent, organized, calm and reassuring manner using good boundaries and good judgment; to be reliable, dependable and flexible; and to accept supervision, suggestions and feedback. Must have interest in working with persons with a behavioral health disability. Ability to work within all the rules, regulations, and policies that govern agency compliance. Organized, responsible, professional, able to work on many projects simultaneously, to be flexible, empathic and able to relate to clients, other professionals, and the general community. Skills MS Office (including Word and Outlook) at not less than an intermediate level with a working knowledge of Excel. Must have excellent oral and written skills, and the ability to communicate with both internal and external contacts. Must be a positive team player. Must have a valid California driver’s license with an insurance driving record and personal automobile for use on the job (mileage reimbursement provided monthly).

Physical Requirements: Capable of the following intermittent activities: stretching, bending, kneeling, twisting, squatting, reaching above and below the shoulder, pushing, pulling, grasping and lifting up to 20 pounds. Capable of the following extended activities: driving, writing, standing and sitting. Employee is required to: walk and climb stairs; reach with hands and arms; be mobile by moving oneself from place to place quickly and easily; carry and lift; climb hills; bend, stoop or kneel; operate a computer keyboard; able to complete all forms in personal writing; make and receive telephone calls; use copier. Employee will be subjected to outside environmental conditions while conducting various levels of outreach to the homeless population. In addition to working in a typical office environment, the employee will be required to work in areas inhabited by homeless persons, to include working in dirty environments and dealing with challenging individuals.
