SUMMARY: The Facilities Planner is responsible for the development, monitoring and updating of a comprehensive facilities operation and maintenance plan for tribal government buildings and infrastructure.
The Facilities Planner will also participate in the planning, design, construction, and development of future buildings and facilities for the Squaxin Island Tribe.
The Facilities Planner will lead, facilitate and coordinate the work of an intradepartmental team in conducting annual facility inspections and surveys, developing cost estimates and priority list for funding. This position will routinely work closely with construction, utilities and maintenance staff, specialized consultants and various contractors to ensure that spaces, structures and infrastructure are maintained in proper operating condition in a routine, scheduled, or anticipated fashion to prevent failure and/or degradation.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: include the following.
- Formulating plans for the future. The Facilities Planner is charged with projecting future requirements and working closely with leadership and Community Development staff to determine the best maintenance and upgrade paths for equipment and infrastructure.
- Creating plans for replacements and repairs. Management and maintenance go hand-in-hand. The Facilities Planner will be responsible for the planning ahead for any needed replacements and repairs, scheduling necessary maintenance and management tasks during the times that are least likely to disrupt regular governmental operations.
- Developing and managing vendor contracts. The Facilities Planner will work with vendors, including procurement and selection, contract negotiations and contract administration and compliance. The Tribe values strong vendor relationships and expects staff to develop and maintain relationships with qualified, reliable vendors that bring good value to Tribal projects.
- Planning and Administration. Performs a variety of routine and complex administrative, technical and professional work both in Community Development and Planning programs of the Tribe. Assists other members of the Planning Department in the planning and development of grant applications for new capital projects.
- Other duties may be assigned.

- Demonstrated ability to perform at a high level, to work independently and in a team environment; conscientious and diligent.
- Basic proficiency in geographic information systems and other computer-based spatial analysis software is desired.
- Experience in one or more building trades.
- Expert knowledge of mechanical, electrical, and plumbing systems.
- Demonstrated project estimating and scheduling experience.
- Outstanding organizational skills.
- Demonstrated project management experience, including project management software proficiency; CMMS (Computerized Maintenance Management System) format.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees, Tribal leadership, the Tribal community and external entities and audiences.
EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE: Master’s Degree and two years of relevant experience OR Bachelor’s Degree and four years of relevant experience OR Associates Degree and six years of experience OR High School Diploma/GED and eight years of relevant experience. Work experience in building maintenance, construction, or other related trades may be used as a substitute for formal education.
LANGUAGE SKILLS: Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, plans, drawings, diagrams or governmental regulations. Must have the ability to write reports, write business correspondence and procedure manuals. Able to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, customers, and general public.
MATHEMATICAL SKILLS: Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, interest, commissions, proportions, percentages, area, circumference, and volume. Ability to apply concepts of algebra and geometry.
REASONING ABILITY: Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Able to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS: Must have a current Washington State Driver’s License. Must pass a WATCH and Tribal background check.

While performing this job the employee may occasionally be exposed to vibration of work equipment. The employee will occasionally work near moving mechanical parts and be exposed to fumes or airborne particles. The employee will occasionally be exposed to wet or humid conditions (non-weather), work in high places, be exposed to toxic or caustic chemicals, extreme heat (non-weather) and risk of electrical shock.
