Important Application Update

DCPS has remained committed to the health and safety of our school community. Therefore, Mayor Bowser announced that during term one (August 31 through November 6), all instruction for students will be virtual. As such, all substitute teachers will be expected to fully engage with DCPS's technology resources and virtual platforms to instruct students. Additionally, the steps in our hiring process which were previously completed in-person have migrated to a virtual platform. Please review the hiring process below.

Hiring process for substitute teachers

Online Application. DCPS will continue to accept applications online for new candidates. Screenings will continue for those who have one to two years of classroom experience and have obtained a bachelor's degree. Candidates who pass the application screen will receive an interview invite to sign up for a virtual interview session.

Virtual Interview. Candidates will be required to complete a virtual five-minute lesson plan using Cisco WebEx. The lesson plan is pivotal in assessing your capabilities to support virtual learning during term one. Candidates will provide the lesson to the interview group, which will consist of no more than ten people. We are looking for substitute teachers who are engaging and have content expertise.

Virtual Document Collection. Upon selection, you will receive an email which lists required documents and clearances for hire. These documents will only be accepted by uploading them to TSHO. Please note, if at any point you cannot submit the documents online, please contact us at (see application details) .

Virtual Orientation. Candidates selected after completion of the virtual interview or by principal recommendation will be required to attend a virtual orientation session to learn how substitute teachers support virtual instruction during this time and how to use SmartFind Express to find substitute teacher assignments.

Please read below pertinent information as it relates to the substitute teacher posiiton: 

DCPS will be accepting applications for candidates with a bachelor's degree AND one of the following criteria:

  1. Retired Teachers (DCPS or other U.S. School Districts)
  2. Candidates with 1-2 years experience working with students
  3. Principal recommendations from current DC Public School Principals. Please have recommendations sent via email to (see application details). 

Candidates with less than 1 year of experience working with students will be required to submit a professional reference letter to us via email at (see application details) within 3 business days. Upon approval, candidates will be notified of the next steps in the hiring process. 

Additionally, candidates will need to complete the following upon selection:

  1. Clear a criminal background check
  2. Clear the mandatory drug and alcohol testing
  3. Clear a TB test
  4. Provide official transcripts (unofficial transcripts will not be accepted)

Please register for an account, which will then allow you to complete and submit your application.  Please be sure that you complete all application questions (make sure there are no questions with an answer of "none" or "NA") before you click the submit button at the bottom of the application.

Upon reviewing your application, you may be invited to interview with us. Our group interview is an integral part of the application process. We want to meet you in person, and we want to see what you can do. Interview sessions are first come first serve with the maximum capacity of 30 interviewees.  Principal recommendations will have interviews waived upon receipt of recommendations to (see application details).  

If you are selected for hire, you will also be required to pass a fingerprinting/background check, a tuberculosis test, submit your official transcript conferring a bachelor's degree, and a drug test. Then, at the orientation session, we confirm that you have completed all the steps required for hire, and you can sign your official DCPS offer letter. Only after you sign your offer letter will you be entered into SmartFind Express, our automated system that Substitute Teachers use to find assignments and keep track of working hours.

Notice of Drug Testing.  This position is a safety-sensitive position.  All safety-sensitive positions are subject to mandatory pre-employment drug testing in accordance with the Child and Youth, Safety and Health Omnibus Act of 2004.  If you are tentatively selected for this position, you will be required to submit to testing for illegal drug use prior to employment, and your employment shall be contingent upon negative test results.  If you are appointed into this position, you shall be subject to mandatory random drug and alcohol testing throughout your employment.
