HRSD’s apprenticeship programs are a combination of on-the-job training and related class room instruction. All can be completed in three or four years. A Math Skills Assessment Test is required prior to entry into HRSD's Apprenticeship Program. You must be willing to work rotating shifts and attend classes two evenings per week. This is an over hire position.
Under broad guidance, the Plant Operator is responsible for:
Operating and controlling the assigned Sewage Treatment or Solids Handling facilities during work
shift, completing HRSD’s Apprenticeship Program and performing various maintenance assignments
High school diploma or GED and Completion of all 32 trade-required apprenticeship courses or equivalent as determined by HRSD’s Apprenticeship Committee
Completion of 100% on-the-job-training skills portion of HRSD’s Apprenticeship program for this trade, or approved equivalent as determined by HRSD’s Apprenticeship Committee
c. Training Levels
This position is fully qualified at Grade 5 with the qualifications noted below. For those persons less qualified, the following training levels have been established:
Grade 5- Virginia Class 1 wastewater work operator’s license
Completion of all 32 trade-required apprenticeship courses, 100% on-the-job training skills, and possession of a Virginia Class 2 wastewater works operator’s license
Grade 5a - Virginia Class 2 wastewater works operator’s license
Completion of 24 trade-required apprenticeship courses, 75% on-the-job training skills, and possession of a Virginia Class 3 wastewater works operator’s license
Grade 5b - Virginia Class 3 wastewater works operator’s license
Completion of 16 trade-required apprenticeship courses, 50% on-the-job training skills, and possession of a Virginia Class 4 wastewater works operator’s license
Grade 5c - Virginia Class 4 wastewater works operator’s license
Completion of 8 trade-required apprenticeship courses and 25% on-the-job training skills (no wastewater license required)
Grade 5d - No experience
d. Special Licenses
Virginia Class I Wastewater Works Operator License (Must be obtained within 8 years of appointment to position)
Valid Driver’s License from state of residence
If assigned to a training level, fully qualified level must be consistently pursued, as a condition of appointment. Failure to do so will result in removal from the position and potentially employment with HRSD.
