Description

The Miami Herald is seeking a creative, collaborative news leader to reimagine one of the premier Spanish language news brands in America -- Miami’s el Nuevo Herald.

As Managing Editor, the person in this role will lead the reinvigoration of this storied news organization, working with a talented team of journalists to reach an ever-growing and increasingly diverse audience of readers, viewers and listeners who prefer news and information delivered in Spanish. The opportunity is to leverage a legacy newspaper into a high-impact newsroom that produces both accountability journalism and breaking news that is first and best on topics of interest to our local audiences.

Identifying that interest requires understanding of how Miami and its people relate and respond not only to developments in Miami-Dade but also to developments in Latin America and the Caribbean. More than half of Miami-Dade’s residents are foreign born and nearly 70 percent of the population is Hispanic.

The person in this role will report to the Executive Editor of the Miami Herald and el Nuevo Herald. The successful candidate will be a talented news editor who can help draw the best work out of our reporters, videographers and producers. This person also must be a thoughtful leader with experience in newsroom transformation, someone able to approach the role with fresh ideas on how to serve a dynamic Hispanic/Latino audience in South Florida.

We are looking for someone who is a strong communicator and a leader who can tailor a management approach to the individual needs of staff members. The person in this position should be eager to collaborate with colleagues at all levels of the Miami Herald organization and across the McClatchy enterprise.

Success in this role will be measured both by the distinctive journalism produced by the el Nuevo Herald newsroom as well as audience growth for that differentiated content. This requires a command of audience analytics and knowledge of the tactics that deliver results, as well as a desire to experiment, iterate and adjust as the news environment dictates.

Change is a central feature of a digital newsroom, and the next Managing Editor of el Nuevo Herald must be both confident and conscientious as we guide a motivated newsroom to always keep our community’s interests at the heart of our journalism.

If this is you, please apply.

Requirements:

  • Native Spanish speaker and writer
  • Fully bilingual, able to edit with ease and speed in both English and Spanish
  • 5-10 years of experience as a successful leader of a newsroom or large team.
  • Experience working with news analytics to grow audience and drive subscriptions
  • Experience as a multi-platform storyteller, with passion for the written word as well as video. Audio experience is a bonus.
  • Knowledge of Miami and South Florida, and the many communities served by el Nuevo Herald
