 Digital Media Manager

The News Literacy Project (NLP) is seeking a full-time digital media manager to implement the organizations website and email strategy. We are experiencing tremendous growth as a result of intense interest in our work and our website our website plays an increasingly important role in supporting this growth.

About NLP 

Founded in 2008, the News Literacy Project is a national nonpartisan education nonprofit that empowers educators to teach middle school and high school students how to sort fact from fiction in the digital age. Our central offering is the Checkology virtual classroom, an online e-learning hub. Almost 30,000 teachers have registered to use Checkology since it was introduced in 2016. Since the beginning of the 2020-21 school year, over 1,300 educators have used the platform with over 41,000 active students in 49 states, the District of Columbia and internationally.

About the position 

As a member of NLPs creative services team, you will work closely with the teams two visual designers and the team lead. Youll manage all activities related to NLPs primary website, newslit.org, handling everything from repurposing and posting written content, writing headlines, selecting and resizing images, building campaign landing pages in WordPress, coding and building weekly newsletters and emails and tracking and reporting on website traffic and NLPs Google AdWords account. You will work with NLPs education, communications, administrative and development teams as well as creative services colleagues to meet the website needs across the organization. Youll have a customer-service approach to working on various website and email initiatives both independently and as part of a creative team.  This position reports to NLPs vice president of creative services.

This position is virtual; the successful candidate can live anywhere in the continental United States.

Responsibilities:

  • Work with the vice president for creative services to implement the organization's website strategy.
  • Design and lay-out website pages using our existing customized WordPress theme.
  • Code responsive emails and monthly newsletters for use with EveryAction.
  • Test responsive emails using Email on Acid and make sure that emails work in all major clients including Outlook.
  • Design and code landing pages for marketing campaigns throughout the year.
  • Create, repurpose and post website content in collaboration with other staff and management.
  • Work with our contracted back-end development agency to further develop and improve the user experience of the website.
  • Monitor, assess and report on website performance on a regular basis using Google Analytics and help develop strategies to grow website traffic.
  • Manage organizations Google AdWords account by creating and monitoring campaigns.
  • Ensure that the website aligns with the organizations brand standards.
  • Keep up-to-date with industry best practices.

Note: Occasional evening work may be required. 

About you

The ideal candidate will have most, if not all, of the following:

  • A degree in informatics, design, computer science, IT, systems engineering or a related qualification.
  • Expert knowledge of website and digital tools including WordPress, Google Analytics and Google AdWords.
  • Proficiency in HTML5, XHTML, CSS, CSS3, cross-browser and cross-platform compatibility.
  • Experience working with EveryAction and other campaign databases.
  • Familiarity with Email on Acid.
  • Excellent grasp of Search Engine Optimization (SEO).
  • Experience in creating various types of digital content.
  • Excellent writing skills.
  • Strong attention to detail with an analytical mind and outstanding problem-solving skills.
  • Process-oriented with the ability to enforce and streamline workflow while working across teams.
  • Project management skills.
  • Team player with strong interpersonal and communication skills.

This person will have a strong passion for our mission, has a natural ability to pay close attention to detail and can work well both independently and collaboratively.
