The Gainesville Sun seeks a full-time sports columnist to provide commentary and analysis on the world of sports in Gainesville, primarily the University of Florida.
This columnist must be able to write timely and compelling columns on tight deadlines; produce unique content for multiple Web platforms; and deliver insight and opinion on a wide range of local sports topics, with an emphasis on the Gators. The columnist may have to occasionally write a news story or feature and also will have the freedom to write columns on a variety of topics not exclusive to the Gators, from pro sports to high school sports.
The successful candidate will be well-versed with social media, able to engage readers through Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, live chats, podcasts and video. They will be encouraged to be the face of our Florida coverage and consistently interact with UF fans, including getting out in the community via public speaking appearances. We want someone with a strong personality who will push the emotional buttons of our readers and viewers, making them think, laugh, cry or get angry.
In addition, the successful candidate will have a strong understanding of journalistic ethics, AP style, accuracy, sports rules d concepts, statistics-keeping, interviewing skills and relationship-building with sources.
