Breaking News Watchdog Reporter

This hybrid jobs puts you in the center of the action at the Asbury Park Press and the Jersey Shore. We are seeking an experienced Breaking News reporter with a track record of posting from the field, shooting video and digging deep to find the enterprise story behind the first-day events. You'll work with some of the top journalists in the nation who have a host of national awards under their belts. We thrive on impact and cut out all the BS between you and the reader so you can deliver the high-impact stories our readers crave.

Required:

Minimum one-year breaking news experience with a digital news site; ability to write quickly and accurately with flair; iPhone video editing skills; comfortable in front of the camera and during live broadcasts; good data and organizational skills; ability to use Excel; and FOIA/public records experience.

Responsibilities:

• Serve as a curious, assertive and energetic journalist who jumps to report on breaking news.
• Break news for digital audiences and be the primary on-scene reporter to cover stories as they develop.
• The ability to report quickly and accurately from the field.
• Solid news judgment and the ability to think and respond quickly in high-pressure situations.
• Grow your digital audience by producing reliable reports, frequent updates and exclusive details.
• Connect with your audience - through social media, in your writing and on camera.

Requirements:

• Bachelors degree or higher
• 1+ years of reporting at a news outlet or equivalent media.
• Source-building, video and other digital-focused skills are a must.
• Proven ability to self-manage in a fast-paced environment.
• Commitment to develop and maintain sources.
• Adept at using social media to tell stories, engage readers, and cover breaking news.
• Ability to meet deadlines, take initiative, receive constructive feedback and work as part of a team yet still show individual initiative.
• This role requires a valid drivers license, reliable transportation and the minimum liability insurance required by state law.
