There's never been a better time to join our talented team. Visit
The Arizona Republic/azcentral.com, the largest newsroom in Arizona, winner of the Pulitzer Prize and part of the USA TODAY NETWORK, is seeking a solutions reporter to examine systemic issues that cause individual problems in Arizona and explore potential solutions to these systemic barriers.
This reporter will focus on tips from our readers and communities and from official sources within various entities. The goal: Identify and understand systemic problems and attempt to fix them.
You will provide an outlet for communities that historically are not reflected in our coverage and emphasize community engagement as a reporting method.
This reporter will focus on enterprise that moves faster than the speed of months long projects. For example, you could examine systemic barriers such as employment, education and transportation opportunity gaps, how government funding designed to help people may not be doing so and how efforts to improve peoples lives actually play out in practice.
This fits into The Republics #HereToHelpAZ initiative but focuses on systemic, structural barriers instead of helping individuals solve their specific problems. Much of #HereToHelpAZ has focused on consumers, but this beat would focus on governmental issues.
The reporter would look to places with similar systemic issues that have successfully worked to address them, allowing our readers to understand potential paths forward and will work with beat reporters who are experts in their coverage areas and find opportunities to collaborate.
The stories will be inherently approachable to readers. They will identify problems and seek to provide options for solving them. Some stories would be traditional watchdog coverage, while others could be narrative-focused or explainers to help people better understand how systems work and what they can do if they run into problems.
The beat is ambitious, community-focused and primed for impact.
