News Reporter
The Hawk Eye/thehawkeye.com, part of the USA TODAY NETWORK, a do-it-all reporter to cover news and features for a Mississippi River city of 25,000 people and the surrounding region. Burlington is a regional center for jobs, education and health care.
This reporter is expected to consistently break exclusive news. He or she will identify, produce and post stories, photos and video quickly and accurately across platforms: mobile, desktop and social media.
Source development is critical to this position. This reporter will cultivate relationships with city and county officials, business leaders and community stakeholders to break stories.
This is an ideal job for a reporter at a small daily or weekly whos looking to move up or a college graduate with significant internship experience. Reporters for the Hawk Eye work closely with the other USA TODAY Network newspapers in Iowa especially Iowa City, but also Des Moines and Ames and have the opportunity to gain publication in those newspapers and to participate in training with the other staffs.
Responsibilities:

Research, report and produce compelling content that continuously grows audience by informing and engaging readers.

Act as a public ambassador through community outreach and connect with readers through social media.

Use live video to spotlight breaking news and high-interest events.

Provide thoughtful analysis of complex issues. Produce watchdog journalism that leads to change.

Use real-time metrics to respond to user demand and reader interest.

Work with newsroom leaders to shape storytelling to meet audience needs and interests tailored to appropriate platforms.

Contribute to the communitys greater good through impactful journalism.
Requirements:
-
Bachelor's or masters in communications, journalism or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Minimum of 1-2 years reporting/newsroom experience is preferred, but we will also consider candidates with significant intern experience.

Previous experience in covering dining and food preferred.

Adept at taking photos and video and will file quickly across platforms: mobile, desktop and social media.

Strong command of AP grammar and style.
-
Strong copy-editing skills and the ability to produce content that is clean, accurate and "publication ready."

Is passionate and enthusiastic about news and content that will work well with audiences on social platforms.

Comfortable in fluid, fast-breaking, stressful situations.

A desire to grow and develop a key beat in our newsrooms.

Is comfortable using social media such as Twitter, Facebook, Instagram and Snapchat to enhance reporting and promote stories.

Understands reporting ethics and sourcing.

Excels in a fast-paced news environment and understands the digital first mission.

Collaborates well with others and can work with a team on the biggest stories.

This role requires a valid drivers license, reliable transportation, and the minimum liability insurance required by state law.
