Do you have an interest in health policy, coding and payer education, as well as advocacy? Do you want to join a mission-driven organization that makes a difference in the U.S. healthcare landscape?

ASTRO, the American Society for Radiation Oncology, is looking for an individual with an interest in health policy to join our team that supports ASTROs advocacy efforts dealing with coding development and guidance, private insurers and Medicare coverage issues.

The role of the Manager of Health Policy involves oversight of ASTROs coding and payer coverage policy initiatives, with primary focus on leveraging ASTROs existing expertise to establish a broad and comprehensive coding education and payer engagement program. Reporting to the Director of Health Policy, the Health Policy Manager will be part of a larger team consisting of a Health Policy Analyst and Health Policy Coordinator, and whose areas of expertise focus on coding education and payer coverage policy review. This individual will work with the health policy team to direct key projects in the department, including but not limited to ASTROs Radiation Oncology Coding Resource, the ASTRO Coding and Coverage Seminar, and a payer education program involving webinars and other educational outreach.

NOTE: The position is DC area-based and currently a work-from-home position due to the COVID-19 pandemic. At this time, there is an option to work from our HQ offices in Arlington, VA (Crystal City) on a voluntary basis. After ASTROs offices fully re-open (target mid-2021), all staff will be expected to return to the offices on a full-time basis, with the opportunity to telework up to two days/week.

Major responsibilities and duties:

  • Leads the production of the ASTRO Radiation Oncology Coding Resource, directs the content, planning and production of the ASTRO Coding and Coverage Seminar educational program and payer education programs, in addition to other education programs throughout the year. This includes interfacing with presenters and other departments within ASTRO.
  • Coordinates with ASTROs Senior Research Analyst to develop surveys and establish metrics for measuring program success. Utilizes these data to make recommendations on ways to improve or modify programming.
  • Coordinates with ASTROs marketing and graphics design teams to develop communications strategies and marketing plans to generate program interest and attendance.
  • Monitors the Federal Register, CMS, OIG and other regulatory websites and work with the Health Policy team to respond to issues related to radiation oncology.
  • Provides content for ASTROs publications including ASTRO News, ASTROgrams, ASTRO website and other publications including writing relevant policy articles and coding education materials to keep ASTRO members current on coding and coverage related matters.
  • Participates in symposia, seminars and other meetings to maintain a professional network and keep current on coding, reimbursement and coverage issues.

Successful candidates will have:


  • A minimum of 5 years of related work experience.
  • Bachelors degree in a related field required, masters preferred.
  • Demonstrated health policy expertise in coding and coverage issues, including familiarity with physician reimbursement.
  • Knowledge of health insurance and managed care issues.
  • Experience writing on coding and coverage issues.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite and other common business applications
  • Experience and proficiency in researching and synthesizing information; experience with association management systems, membership databases, abstract management systems a plus
  • Excellent analytical, oral and written communication skills including public presentations. Also must have strong command of grammar and excellent proofreading ability, ability to communicate effectively with staff, management, leadership and members.
  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to pay close attention to detail and prioritize in order to meet critical deadlines.
  • A professional, customer-service focused demeanor; be self-directed and have an innate curiosity for seeking out answers to unknown questions.
  • An interest in healthcare, government or advocacy.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team, while managing multiple tasks and meeting critical deadlines.
  • Previous management and supervisory experience a plus.
  • Ability to travel domestically overnight and on weekends, approximately 10% of the time.

Desired Qualifications include:

  • AAPC or AHIMA coding certification.
  • Experience in coding and coverage, including familiarity with reimbursement; knowledge of health insurance and managed care issues.
  • Knowledge of coding issues.
  • Experience with medical association or radiation oncology practice.
  • Familiarity with Medicare regulations.
