Retail Reporter
The Des Moines Register/desmoinesregister.com, part of the USA TODAY NETWORK, is seeking a competitive, enterprising reporter to cover central Iowas retail scene.
Its a newsy time to cover retail at the Register as businesses of all sizes struggle to survive the pandemic and as brick-and-mortar stores transform to compete with online sales.
The writer for this beat is expected to break exclusive news about what new stores, restaurants and entertainment facilities are coming to Des Moines and its suburbs and which businesses are closing shop.
This writer also will develop enterprise on local and national retail trends and do investigative reporting on subjects such as consumer scams and development tax credits.
This reporter is expected to identify, produce and post stories, photos and video quickly and accurately across mobile, desktop and social media platforms.
All reporters at the Register handle occasional general assignments and breaking news.

Provide thoughtful analysis of complex issues. Produce watchdog journalism that leads to change.

Requirements:

Bachelor's or masters in communications, journalism or an equivalent combination of education and experience. We will also consider candidates with strong internships.

Minimum of 1-2 years reporting/newsroom experience.

Adept at taking photos and video and will file quickly across platforms: mobile, desktop and social media.

Strong command of AP grammar and style.

Strong copy-editing skills and the ability to produce content that is clean, accurate and "publication ready."

Is passionate and enthusiastic about news and content that will work well with audiences on social platforms.

Comfortable in fluid, fast-breaking, stressful situations.

A desire to grow and develop a key beat in our newsrooms.

Is comfortable using social media such as Twitter, Facebook, Instagram and Snapchat to enhance reporting and promote stories.

Understands reporting ethics and sourcing.

Excels in a fast-paced news environment and understands the digital first mission.

Collaborates well with others and can work with a team on the biggest stories.

This role requires a valid drivers license, reliable transportation, and the minimum liability insurance required by state law.
