Description

Senior Campaign Coordinator

Climate and Energy Program

Union of Concerned Scientists

Washington, DC, Cambridge, MA., or Chicago, IL

The Position

The Union of Concerned Scientists (UCS) is an independent national nonprofit that uses science to protect our health, safety, and environment. We are scientists, engineers, economists, activists, and everyday people who develop and advocate for innovative, practical solutions to some of our planet's most pressing problems-from combating global warming and developing sustainable ways to feed, power, and transport ourselves, to fighting misinformation, advancing racial equity, and reducing the threat of nuclear war.

Are you ready to help the US transition from fossil fuels to a renewable energy future? Do you care-really care-about policies that will create an equitable and inclusive transition? We're looking for a skilled and energetic campaigner who can join our top-notch Climate & Energy team as we work to reduce global warming emissions and modernize our electricity grid.

As Senior Campaign Coordinator, you'll develop campaign strategy and tactics, leverage UCS analytic and technical expertise with policymakers, organize and engage scientists and experts through online and offline activities, develop campaign messaging and materials, and coordinate events to advance clean energy solutions.

Responsibilities

  • Conceive, develop, and implement outreach and organizing projects to advance state, regional, and federal legislative and regulatory energy campaign goals.
  • Build relationships and coordinate campaign work with allies, including environmental justice and community organizations.
  • Meaningfully engage UCS supporters and other audiences to achieve campaign goals.
  • Contribute to high-level analysis of clean energy issues and promote this work to decision makers and other audiences.
  • Raise the profile of communities taking action to transition to clean energy, with special attention given to the social, economic, and environmental dimensions of a just and equitable energy transition in working-class, Latinx/Hispanic, Black, Indigenous and immigrant communities.
  • Work with campaign team and the UCS Communications Department to develop and deploy media strategies to further visibility for modern grid work.
  • Manage, initiate, and/or coordinate convenings, conferences, and symposia in support of campaign goals. Represent UCS at conferences and serve as a UCS spokesperson at other events as needed.
  • Establish and maintain, as needed, personal contact with government officials, technical experts, private sector allies, and other non-profit organizations to exchange information, share resources, and engage in collaborative activities.
  • Develop metrics for, track effectiveness of, and help ensure implementation of lessons learned from campaigns.
  • Support organizational learning on issues of equity, justice, and dismantling oppression.
  • Stay informed about clean energy and grid modernization technology and policy, as well as effective outreach strategies for influencing campaign targets.

Ensure that campaign-related databases, documents, and other

Requirements

Qualifications and Experience

Five to seven years of comparable and relevant experience in organizing and advocacy and a bachelor's degree or equivalent are required. Qualified candidates must have a keen interest in and basic knowledge of clean energy technologies and issues, and strong project management experience, along with good communication skills. Also required are demonstrated abilities to:

  • Conceive, plan, and implement effective advocacy campaigns.
  • Communicate effectively with professionals who may be expert and/or prominent in their fields.
  • Work independently, balance a multitude of tasks, be a self-starter, and collaborate as a member of a multidisciplinary team.

Little or no exertion required. May spend extended periods at computer.

Some travel required.

At UCS, comparable training and/or experience can be substituted for degrees when appropriate.

UCS is an equal opportunity employer continually seeking to diversify its staff. In particular, we're dedicated to broadening opportunities for individuals from demographic groups that are historically underrepresented in the sciences and in environmental advocacy. We're also committed to building an inclusive workplace culture where talented people of widely diverse backgrounds can thrive. We've adopted this commitment because we believe the inclusion of culturally diverse perspectives will improve our work and produce better societal and environmental outcomes for all, including historically disenfranchised communities. We are actively seeking people who bring diverse backgrounds and perspectives to join us in this work.

Benefits

Compensation, Hours and Location: This is a full-time position, based in either UCS's Washington, DC, Cambridge, MA, or Chicago, IL offices. For candidates who meet all position requirements, the salary is around $59,000. UCS offers excellent benefits and a rewarding work environment.
