The Position

The Union of Concerned Scientists (UCS) is an independent national nonprofit that uses science to protect our health, safety, and environment. We are scientists, engineers, economists, activists, and everyday people who develop and advocate for innovative, practical solutions to some of our planet's most pressing problems-from combating global warming and developing sustainable ways to feed, power, and transport ourselves, to fighting misinformation, advancing racial equity, and reducing the threat of nuclear war.

Are you ready to help the US transition from fossil fuels to a renewable energy future? Do you care-really care-about enacting policies that will create an equitable and just transition? Do you want your work to have real, lasting impacts on how energy policy decisions are made? UCS is looking for an experienced campaigner, manager, and advocate who will oversee our clean energy campaign, and help us scale up our work to modernize the US electric grid. The right candidate will be able to thoughtfully navigate energy policy and advocacy as they intersect with issues of diversity, equity, and inclusion.


  • Oversee UCS energy campaign plans, including budget and resource allocation and campaign execution and priorities.
  • Conceive, plan, implement, and evaluate strategies, tactics, and initiatives that persuade regulators and policymakers to make decisions in line with UCS desired goals and preferred solutions.
  • Work to ensure intersectionality in strategy development, incorporating partners' needs and ideas in the creation of campaigns, analyses, and tactics.
  • Manage the successful scale-up of initiatives and partnerships on issues related to modernizing our nation's electric grid; help position UCS as a thought leader in this space.
  • Help develop new models of partnerships with frontline and environmental justice organizations.
  • Represent UCS as a key convenor and contributor in the growing grid advocacy movement: to the public, decisionmakers, allies, and experts.
  • Strategically manage externally changing conditions, campaign opportunities, and resource constraints
  • Supervise campaign staff, interns, and consultants, and liaise with other UCS staff.
  • Ensure the inclusive and transparent functioning of a campaign team that draws on the contributions of all members to deliver external impact.
  • Design media and online engagement strategies and coordinate activities across platforms that will strategically educate and put pressure on target audiences.
  • Develop metrics for, track effectiveness of, and help ensure implementation of lessons learned from campaign activities.
  • Stay informed about science advocacy and movement building-related issues and the primary campaigns of UCS programs as they relate to energy campaign work.
  • Maintain expertise and exhibit authority on clean energy and grid modernization technology and policy,


Qualifications and Experience

  • Position requires at least ten years of comparable and relevant experience in advocacy, and a bachelor's degree or equivalent. Also required are:
  • Demonstrated ability to conceive, plan and implement effective regulatory or legislative focused advocacy campaigns.
  • Strong management skills, including a commitment to transparency and inclusivity.
  • Demonstrated ability to thoughtfully navigate issues related to diversity, equity, and inclusion and a deep commitment to advancing these values.
  • Experience supervising staff and an ability to collaborate as a leader and member of a multidisciplinary team.
  • Excellent writing and public speaking skills.
  • Ability to build relationships with policymakers, technical experts, allies, and UCS colleagues and donors

Enthusiasm about the application of science to public policy, especially on energy issues, and background in climate change and energy are strongly preferred.

Little or no exertion required. May spend extended periods at computer.

Some travel required.

Compensation, Hours and Location: This is a full-time position, based in either UCS's Washington, DC, Cambridge, MA, or Chicago, IL offices.
