The Courier Journal, part of the USA TODAY Network, is seeking awatchdog/enterprise editorto work with an award-winning team of investigative reporters.
The idealcandidate will have a track record of high-impact work in accountability reporting, with a readiness to conceive of and execute big projects, while also editing ongoing watchdog and enterprise reporting.
The candidate should also have a background in public records access and familiarity with data analysis as well as top-notch storytelling and editing skills and the organizational chops to keep projects on track while coaching reporters through often complicated and sensitive topics.
This opening gives you the opportunity to work in Kentuckys largest, most ambitious newsroom that was awarded a 2020 Pulitzer Prize in breaking news for its unrelenting coverage of last-minute pardons issued by outgoing Gov. Matt Bevin.
The Courier Journal newsroom also has consistently led the nation in coverage of the police killing of Breonna Taylor, filing dozens upon dozens of open-records requests to get to the truth of why Taylor ended up dead and aggressively pursuing legal remedies, filing appeals to the attorney general's office and with the courts.
In this position, you would lead some of our most-experienced and aggressive reporters and collaborate with other editors at The Courier Journal and across our nationwide network of more than 300 newsrooms.

Responsibilities:
Lead a team of reporters and collaborate with others across the newsroom to identify and execute powerful investigative journalism.
Drive innovative storytelling in all formats, from written word to video, audio and graphics.
Conceptualize stories, work with reporters to develop reporting plans and edit their work into a polished and engaging final form.
Collaborate with other investigative editors across the USA TODAY Network on best practices and multisite projects.
Edit projects and complex stories, as well as daily stories and follow-ups from team members.
Guide journalists by consultation and coaching before, during and after the creation of content.
Provide great customer service, helping readers find answers and solutions.
Requirements:
Bachelor's or master's degree in communications, journalism, marketing or related field preferred or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Five years of professional and/or media management experience.
Command of media law and principles of ethical conduct.
Must embrace peer-to-peer training, as both a teacher and student.
Strong news judgment and editing skills.
Comfortable in fluid, fast-breaking, stressful situations.
A passion for empathetic, compassionate storytelling.
Attention to detail and accuracy.
Able to build a coverage strategy using analytics and innovation.
Experience with advanced storytelling techniques on multiple platforms.
Understanding use of metrics, social-media and SEO knowledge.
Able to multi-task and excel under intense deadline pressure in a rapidly changing environment.
