Sales Analyst II

National Product Sales sets the strategic direction to maximize sales and revenue of newspapers in retail environments (known in the industry as single copy) for all Gannett daily publications, including USA TODAY. The team serves as a point of contact with retail partners in developing sales objectives, providing promotional opportunities and constructive problem solving.National Product Sales is responsible for leading the single copy business and regularly communicating with other departments on upcoming pricing initiatives or other strategic objectives.


The position will closely monitor inventory allocations (draw) and unsold copies (returns) for a specified number of local and national publications. Critical thinking is essential as the main success metric of this position is maximizing single copy sales and reducing unsold newspapers in order to achieve budgeted sales volume and revenue goals. Individual is responsible for effective draw management and the database integrity maintenance (system cleanup and coding) of all existing locations, maintaining volume and productivity reports, and maintaining communication within the department as well as with the distribution department.


Analyze market trends, seasonality and news story impacts to adjust single copy accounts, minimizing returns and sellouts and maximizing sales. Maintain the Genesys and Champion systems activity required to adjust the sales locations, newspaper draws and returns and billing.

Monitor locations thatsell outas well as locations that have a higher than expected return percentage and adjust as needed.

Create and maintain reports to track volume and sellout statistics for each of the publications assigned. Follow up with the distribution team on issues that impact accuracy of data analytics.

Maintain single copy sales reports on a daily, weekly, monthly and annual basis. These reports will track sales volumes, draw management and sales initiatives for the department. Some of these reports are sent to the field in order to try to maximize revenue and minimize expense.

Assist in managing department volume budget and forecasting sales trends providing analysis and explanation for each. Maintaining Campaign Manager for each USCP site, including putting in actual volumes as well as making trend adjustments in order to project single copy volumes for the remainder of the year.

Participate in weekly and monthly calls discussing trends and any local events or sales promotions that might have an impact on the future weeks sales and draw setting.


Education-College degree preferred. A minimum of two years college or equivalent business experience required. Keen attention to details and strong analytical skills are essential. Genesys and Champion experience preferred.

Experience-Experience in business information analysis, preferably in sales dynamics, sales trends, sales patterns and product merchandising preferred. Business-to-business sales experience preferred. Previous newspaper experience is a plus.

Knowledge- Individual must have exceptional knowledge of Microsoft Office products including Word, Excel and Outlook. Exceptional understanding of the dynamics of sales as impacted by market trends, economy and current events.

Skills-To be successful, individual must possess strong analytical ability, advanced Microsoft Excel skills, strong math skills, customer service and problem-solving skills. Must be able to handle multiple tasks in a fast-paced environment. Excellent verbal and written communication abilities are required.
