Characteristics of the Job
Under general supervision, responsible for the operation and routine adjustment of equipment and facilities of both the pumping and purification sections of the water plant. Work is assigned either orally or in writing and is performed independently. Supervision is carried out by observation of effectiveness of plant operation through an analysis of shift reports and chemical laboratory tests. Performs other duties as assigned.
Training and Experience
High school diploma or GED equivalent, supplemented by courses in chemistry or related subjects; ability to obtain Class “A” Illinois Potable Water Operator’s certification; considerable experience in water plant operation and maintenance; or any equivalent combination of training and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Knowledge of the functions and servicing requirements of mechanical equipment and machinery; knowledge of the processes involved in the purification of water including some knowledge of chemistry and hydraulics; and knowledge of occupational hazards and safety precautions of the work.
Skill in the analysis of treatment or pumping problems and formation and implementation of remedies.
Ability to inspect machinery and mechanical equipment in operation and to detect flaws and defects; ability to read meters and charts accurately and determine difference in color in tests performed; ability to maintain simple manual or computerized record of shift operation; ability to use independent judgment and take alternative steps in the event of equipment failure; ability to understand and carry out oral and written instructions; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees, supervisor and the general public; ability to comply with all local, state and federal safety regulations; and ability to perform physical activities occasionally at a heavy demand level.
