Traffic Operations Worker

Characteristics of the Job
Under general supervision, performs entry level and semi-skilled electrical work by assisting the Traffic Operations Specialist with the installation, maintenance and repair of traffic signal and street light electrical systems and equipment; locates underground cable at proposed site of excavation; and maintains a parts inventory.
Training and Experience
High school diploma or GED equivalent; two (2) years experience as an electrician or electronic equipment technician; or any equivalent combination of training and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
General working knowledge of electricity, electrical principles, electrical circuits, and wiring; of hand and power tools; specific knowledge of JULIE locates and markings; traffic control procedures; and safe work practices, procedures and equipment. General knowledge of traffic signals and traffic signal controllers preferred.
Skill in performing electrical work; reading and interpreting plans, blueprints, utility maps and drawings; public and employee relations and in maintaining effective working relationships; routine computer operations; interpersonal interactions to exchange critical information with contractors, engineers, operations and workers in other related crafts; preparation of all professional reports and any related written correspondence; maintaining inventories; and using Microsoft Outlook, Word, Excel, ArcGIS Suite and other applicable traffic-related software.
Ability to read, analyze and interpret documents such as instructions, procedure manuals, diagrams, blueprints, utility maps and drawings; respond effectively to inquiries or complaints; write reports, business correspondence and work procedures; effectively present information and respond to questions from managers, elected officials, employees and the general public; calculate figures; solve practical problems; and safely use hand and power tools.
Licenses, Registrations and Certifications
Valid Illinois Class B Commercial Driver’s License (CDL-B) with air brakes endorsement, or equivalent, within 45 days of hire.
Must possess electrical tools normally used in the repair and maintenance of electrical systems.
