A Fire Apparatus Operator is at the journey level and the highest classification in the Firefighter series. Under immediate supervision, engages in firefighting and fire prevention activities while protecting life and property. Incumbents have the experience and knowledge to operate all fire apparatus, are qualified to instruct other firefighters and act as supervisors in the absence of fire officers when assigned by Department management. Incumbent operates and maintains fire apparatus, rescue vehicles and other firefighting equipment, participates in fire drills and studies firefighting techniques, and performs other related work as required. The training includes State and local training mandates, the Yuba City Fire Department local conditions, and training on department apparatus. Within eighteen (18) months of the appointment date, the internally promoted Fire Apparatus Operator must successfully complete the Department's Aerial Apparatus manual and all training and testing requirements for that manual. If the promoted individual has not completed their Water Tender Manual prior to appointment to FAO, the individual will be given 24 months to complete both the Aerial Apparatus Manual and Water Tender Manual, along with the training and testing required for both apparatus. If the internally promoted Fire Apparatus Operator is not successful in completing this requirement, they may be reduced to their previous rank at the discretion of the Fire Chief or their designee. All lateral transfers (employees hired after January 1, 2015) shall be tentative and subject to a probationary period of thirty nine (39) pay periods. All lateral transfers are subject to dismissal if they are not successful in the job duties listed within this document, department policies and procedures and/or failure to successfully pass the Aerial Apparatus Operator manual or testing process within the probationary period.
Minimum Qualifications
Education: Possession of a high school diploma or equivalent (GED). Completion of formal or informal education sufficient to ensure the ability to read and write at a level for successful job performance. The successful completion of California State Fire Marshal (CSFM) Courses Driver/Operator 1A and Driver Operator 1B.
Experience: At least two (2) years of recent, progressively responsible full-time experience in the fire service. The candidate must also be California State certified as a Firefighter I and Firefighter II , or has completed the YCFD FF I and FF II Manual and the required in house testing for Firefighter FF I and FF II.
Licenses and/or Certificates Required:
- Possession of a valid California driver's license with the appropriate firefighter endorsement
- Healthcare Provider CPR certificate
- Valid State of California Emergency Medical Technician I (E.M.T) Certificate or a valid State of California Paramedics Certificate
- State of California Firefighter 1
- State of California Firefighter II or has completed the YCFD FF I and FF II Manual and the required in house testing for Firefighter FF I and FF II.
- CSFM Driver/Operator 1A certificate and CSFM Driver/Operator 1B certificate
