Sports Audio/Video Producer

The USA TODAY Network, which includes more than 260 local news organizations and the flagship USA TODAY, is seeking an experienced audio/video producer to join the engagement desk of our new subscription sports service.The candidate will be dedicated to producing and programming audio and video content that engages the audience. The ideal candidate must demonstrate good news judgment and an entrepreneurial spirit, should have prior digital news experience and have sound SEO and social knowledge. He or she must be detail-oriented and work well under pressure to meet demanding deadlines. The ideal candidate is a strong collaborator, who can work closely with reporters, content coaches and newsroom leadership. Strong knowledge of sports and ability to produce fun, creative and innovative content are mandatory. This role will include early morning, night and/or weekend work.

Typical job duties:

  • Track down news-adjacent stories, facts, photos and b-roll to create multimedia content around trending topics
  • Pitch content ideas, including videos and podcasts, that focus on what our audience is talking about in the moment
  • Edit, produce and publish video and audio content, optimizing for SEO and digital best practices
  • Work with reporters and editors to enhance our audio and visual coverage, offering creative guidance
  • Monitor social media and third-party content providers for trending news
  • Use metrics to determine traffic patterns and make changes tied to the data. Familiarity with and Google Analytics products a plus
  • Work collaboratively with network partners to plan and share content


  • A bachelor's degree in communications or journalism, or the equivalent in experience and education
  • At least 2-5 years of experience working for a daily news organization
  • Experience producing video content for digital platforms for a news outlet
  • Experience with social media and creating videos for social media platforms such as Facebook, Twitter, Snapchat and Instagram
  • Experience analyzing video analytics to drive editorial decisions
  • Have a basic technical understanding of video systems and operations
  • Deep knowledge and passion for sports
  • Excellent news judgment
  • Ability to act calmly and decisively in complex breaking news situations
  • Knowledge of AP style
  • Top-notch writing, editing and headline-writing skills
  • Excellent communication skills and ability to multi-task in a fast-paced news environment
  • Understanding of video rights management
