Growth & Development/Childrens Issues Reporter

The News Star/, part of the USA TODAY NETWORK, is looking for a reporter who creative, curious, persistent and loves people.

This reporter will be adept at creating relationships that will allow them to produce interesting news stories that the community will want to read. To accomplish this, our reporter will need sound news judgement, great storytelling skills and discernment. We want this reporter to dig deeper into trends, public issues and enterprise stories associated with both business and childrens issues.

Business news will include stories that tell the community about openings and closings in the area, employment opportunities as well as economic trends. Childrens issues can be widely interpreted to include all issues that impact families. Education will be a part of this beat, but it will also focus on larger problems like poverty, the impact of reduced broadband access on learning, food deserts and lack of accessible healthcare.

This job is about city growth, social change and political nuance. Its telling stories about how we live and the decisions that impact how we live.

Its for someone who isnt afraid of the biggest story of the day, the month, the year, and sticking with it, following through on news tips and developing the best multi-sourced story possible.

The News Star is looking for a reporter strong with public information requests who hasnt forgotten how good old-fashioned shoe leather often leads to the best writing. The reporter is a strong storyteller who doesnt just break news but has the writing and multimedia skills that make readers invest into reading longer pieces.

We want a smart, ambitious, hard-working, nice reporter who is self-driven and independently develops a strong story. You will be required to use your discretion and news judgment to influence how we approach our coverage.

The News-Star is part of the USA TODAY network and works closely with the other nine USA TODAY network papers in Louisiana to exchange and share content.

Monroe and West Monroe, which anchor our market, are in northeastern Louisiana, with many opportunities for outdoor activities, a university and an active arts community. Were an easy drive from Dallas, Baton Rouge, New Orleans and Houston.
