County Government Reporter
The Gaston Gazette/gastongazette.com, part of the USA TODAY NETWORK, seeks a watchdog/lead reporter to cover county government and general assignment reporting.
This is a highly competitive, fast-paced beat that touches on issues important to all living in the area, including government accountability, equity, economic development, and sense of place. The reporter in this role cant get caught in the flood of information; the winning candidate will be responsible for coverage that holds public officials accountable and helps readers make informed decisions about their communities. The reporter instinctively seeks data and documentation yet understands that the best stories are about people.
The winning candidate must be able to develop professional contacts to obtain news information and demonstrate a keen eye for important details found in government agendas, budgets, and other public records. That means consistently digging below the surface, with persistence. The reporter must be attuned to political trends, alliances and influence in polarizing times and write with uncommon skill.
The reporters work must spark conversations and action on important issues for the people of Gaston County. The winning candidate should be comfortable in working collaboratively and effectively in a team environment, while always adhering to the highest journalistic ethical standards.
- Uses source development, data and document reporting and strategic thinking to identify key issues.
- Offers independent, innovative thinking in shaping coverage of those issues.
- Follows disciplined approach to deliver high-impact work on multiple platforms.
- Uses metrics to gauge audience interests and works to develop coverage plans to better satisfy audience needs.
- Places a priority on data analysis to identify trends that would otherwise go unreported.

Bachelor's or masters degree in communications, journalism, or related field preferred or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Minimum of two years of reporting experience.
Strong command of AP grammar and style.
Strong copy-editing skills and the ability to produce content that is clean, accurate and "publication ready."
Is passionate and enthusiastic about news and content that will work well with audiences on social platforms.
Is comfortable using social media such as Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, and Snapchat to enhance reporting and promote stories.
Understands reporting ethics and sourcing.
Excels in a fast-paced news environment and understands the digital first mission.
Works weekends and nights as needed.
Collaborates well with others and can work with a team on the biggest stories.
This role requires a valid drivers license, reliable transportation, and the minimum liability insurance required by state law.
