Midwest Criminal Justice writer: A reporter who will focus on the administration of justice across the Midwest, from policing and prosecutions to prisons and probation. The Midwest Region of the USA TODAY Network encompasses Illinois, Indiana and Kentucky. It boasts large metropolitan cities and small farming communities and rural towns from the Appalachian Mountains to the eastern edge of the Corn Belt.

This position examines the tension points and volatility where racial injustice intersects with the administration of criminal law, such as the Breonna Taylor situation in Louisville. This position is multi-faceted, examining such things as police department practices, guns in our communities, racial demographics and trends of criminal-law enforcement, such as how African Americans are victimized by crime at rates dramatically higher than whites and the contrasts in homicide victimization rates.

This is an across-the-Midwest watchdog/enterprise role that digs deeply into the criminal justice system of the Heartland, examining the pertinent issues across the racial and ideological landscape that have a huge impact on the lives of millions of Midwesterners of all races. This position is part of the USA TODAY Network's expanded commitment to covering race, inclusivity and diversity in the 12 regions around the United States that comprise our local-to-national network.
