EDUCATION REPORTER

The Topeka Capital-Journal is seeking an education reporter to produce exclusive enterprise and watchdog work focusing on K-12 education across the Shawnee County school districts, and higher education, which includes the University of Kansas, Kansas State University and Washburn University, as well as area community colleges and technical schools.

This beat offers the opportunity to go out and find the best stories.

The K-12 part of the beat will focus on how education policy affects children and their parents, as well as taxpayers and community stakeholders. This reporters portfolio will extend beyond whats happening in the classroom to include almost anything involving the lives of children.

The Topeka education reporter also works with a team of reporters across Kansas to develop education enterprise of statewide interest.

A background in education reporting is preferred but not required. A deep curiosity about education trends is a must.

This reporter is expected to consistently break exclusive news. He or she will identify, produce and post stories, photos and video quickly and accurately across multiple platforms, including social media.

This reporter also will handle general assignments and breaking news.

Topeka -- population 127,000 people -- is the capital city of Kansas. It has a revitalized downtown, the NOTO arts district and a thriving business and theater community.

  • Provide thoughtful analysis of complex issues. Produce watchdog journalism that leads to change.
  • Use real-time metrics to respond to user demand and reader interest.
  • Work with newsroom leaders to shape storytelling to meet audience needs and interests tailored to appropriate platforms.
  • Contribute to the communitys greater good through impactful journalism.

  • Bachelor's degree.
  • At least a year of professional journalism experience or significant internship experience.
  • High-level writing, communication and time management skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to work well on deadline.
  • A valid drivers license and reliable transportation.
