Investigative/Political Editor The Clarion-Ledger / clarionledger.com , part of the USA TODAY NETWORK, is looking for an editor to lead our investigative and politics team to produce impactful, policy-changing investigations throughout the state of Mississippi. Our investigative reporting has led to huge audience gains for newsroom, and we are seeking a digitally savvy editor who can continue this momentum through exclusive enterprise and investigative reporting. We're looking for someone with a proven ability to guide political and enterprise reporting while also seamlessly navigating daily and breaking news stories. This person must have top-notch storytelling and editing skills as well as great organizational skills to keep projects on track while coaching reporters through often complicated and sensitive topics. He or she would also work across the newsroom on investigative stories. The editor must understand the political landscape in Mississippi with the goal of unearthing unique angles for stories. He or she must be able to drive our coverage of state and local governments, politics and elections. We are looking for someone who has a track record of reporting or editing accountability stories that have led to policy-changes or new laws. Great investigative reporting, editing and project management skills are a must, as is demonstrated talent for helping our reporters identify and produce important, groundbreaking political stories. The ideal candidate must also understand how to use metrics and audience research to guide decisions about covering topics and issues that will drive digital audience growth. This editor will be part of the Clarion Ledger leadership team and will help direct the newsroom staff and also will spend time in the community regularly. This editor must effectively collaborate with editors and leadership in the South Region and the regional Digital Optimization Team. Responsibilities : Experience covering and a passion for politics. Have editing experience in a digitally focused newsroom. Know how to help reporters tell investigative and political stories in real time and include alternate story forms and visual elements that drive the narrative. Understand how metrics and analytics can help us determine how to best reach our audience. Know how to turn readers into subscribers by helping reporters tell relevant stories. Be a teacher, not just an editor. Be a team player who likes to collaborate with their coworkers. Produce both short-term investigations and longer-term, project-level journalism Work collaboratively with other teams across the newsroom, including digital, photo and design Produce investigative content that works for all platforms.
Requirements : Bachelor's or master's degree in communications, journalism or related field or equivalent combination of education and experience. 5 years of experience in journalism writing, editing or management roles. Solid news judgment and the ability to consistently produce clean copy, whether stories, captions or headlines. Top-notch organizational and time management skills are a must. Command of media law and principles of ethical conduct. Command of public information requests. Knowledge of Mississippi's open records law a plus. Experience editing and shaping political, watchdog and investigative journalism. Exceptional planning and organizational skills. Understanding use of metrics, social-media and SEO knowledge. Self-motivation and self-direction. Strong grasp of journalism skills (reporting and editing) and advanced knowledge of writing, spelling, grammar and AP. Able to multi-task and excel under intense deadline pressure in a rapidly changing environment. Applies innovative, creative thinking to support the company's goals.
