USA TODAY is seeking an editor with SEO/SEM strategy experience to join us as a full-time Search and Optimization editor.
The ideal candidate will be eager to work with the newsroom to optimize, and create when necessary, content for distribution over search channels. They will be immersed in the day-to-day operations of the newsroom and will help USA TODAYs content become discoverable through organic search, Google News and paid search. This editor will help USA TODAY get in front of users seeking answers to everything from whats trending in the moment to simple, but common, everyday questions.
The candidate will work with editors and content teams across the newsroom to prepare keyword research in advance of major events and will assist the newsroom in a content strategy and execution for evergreen content. They will also monitor SERP and help the newsroom optimize content on a daily basis.
Collaborate with editors and reporters to full optimize the metadata and presentation of content for visibility on search.
Monitor SERP daily and help the newsroom optimize content both before and after initial publish to help USA TODAY maintain a competitive edge in search.
Provide one-on-one training to newsroom staff.
Proficiently use SEO tools to track keywords over time and provide actionable insights to content team.
Coordinate with analytics team to set up appropriate reports to accurately track progress of certain keywords or topics.
Bachelor's or masters degree in Communications, Journalism, Marketing or related field or equivalent combination of education and experience.
At least three years of experience editing in a news organization with a focus on keyword optimization
Ability to think and act tactically and strategically.
Proficiency in AP style and grammar.
Strong collaboration and communication skills.
A self-starter who is willing to brainstorm and execute on newsroom strategies
A strong willingness to try new things and learn from the results
Mastery of SEO and how people discover content on different search platforms, including voice
Experience with NewsDashboard, Conductor Searchlight or other SEO tools is a plus
Experience with Google Ads: Search (Google AdWords) or other search marketing tools is a plus.
