THE DIVISION
This position will be part of the Operations Support Division which consists of the Investigations Bureau, Support Services Bureau, and the Professional Standards Bureau. The Identification Technician is part of the Crime Lab which operates within the Investigations Division.  

Examples of Duties

THE POSITION
The Crime Lab supports Patrol and the Investigations Divisions with crime scene and evidence analysis. The Identification Technician responds to major crime scenes or incidents where specialized services and equipment are needed.   These services include crime scene and evidence photography, crime scene diagraming, impressions evidence analysis (footwear, tire tread, and tool marks), serial number restorations, and collection of surveillance video.
 
The Identification Technician is also responsible for conducting friction ridge print analysis and cell phone forensic examinations using modern techniques and equipment. Additionally, the Identification Technician provides expert witness testimony relative to their investigations and the various forensic disciplines performed.

Qualifications / Requirements

THE IDEAL CANDIDATE
The Visalia Police Department is looking for a professional candidate who must possess a high level of professionalism, attention to detail, and effective communication skills. The ideal candidate will be self-motivated and have excellent time management. They must possess the ability to compose and write clear, concise, and accurate reports, and interpret laws, ordinances, policies, and procedures.
 
The candidate must have the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with coworkers and the public.  Techniques for obtaining known finger and palm print impressions, latent friction ridge print development, and friction ridge print comparisons is highly desirable.  

EXPERIENCE AND EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS:
Any combination equivalent to experience and education that could likely provide the required knowledge, skill and ability is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge, skill and abilities would be:

  • Two (2) years experience with a law enforcement related agency including one (1) year of evidence or crime scene processing.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Possession of a valid California Driver's License by time of appointment.
