USA TODAY is looking for an experienced investigative reporterinspired by the nation's biggest breaking news to dig deeperfor short- and long-term stories that hold powerful institutions and people to account.

We want journalists unafraid of asking tough questions, who wont lose sight of the story when combing through reams of records and data. We value accuracy, fairness and investigative work that uncovers wrongs and pinpoints whos responsible. Youll need a track record of building stories around real people. With the nation as your topic, you will have the freedom to range widely in pursuit of unique stories. You also will have opportunities to collaborate with other members of the I-team and work across the Gannett Network, partnering with the largest team of journalists in the U.S.


Our investigations team works from locations across the country so this position can be based at ourheadquarters in McLean, Virginia, at one of our local newsrooms, orremotely under the right circumstances.


QUALIFICATIONS:

  • At least five years of experience as a reporter for a daily news media organization, including a track record of compelling enterprise and/or investigative work.
  • Knack for making complex stories relatable on digital, print and social media platforms.
  • Deep understanding of how to use records and data in the service of strong storytelling.
  • Organizational ability to pursue short-term and long-term reporting efforts simultaneously.
