Full Job Description

Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or GED - REQUIRED
  • Valid Driver’s License - REQUIRED
  • Some knowledge of: equipment, materials, supplies, practices, methods, hazards and safety precautions used in street maintenance and road construction; tree maintenance; and heavy equipment operation.
  • Able to read, comprehend, and respond to written and verbal instruction. Have basic knowledge to operate computer word and spreadsheet programs.
  • Obtain a valid Class “A” Commercial Driver’s License with appropriate endorsements and flagger certification within six months of hire.
  • Herbicide/pesticide applicator’s license may be required.

Responsibilities:

  • Inspect, repair, and maintain public streets and rights-of-way, including street signs, pavement markings, trees, and community relation projects.
  • Produce a variety of records and reports relating to these activities.
  • Perform required labor involved in the construction and maintenance of pavement cutting, crack sealing, base repair, sidewalks, curb, gutter, and wheelchair ramps repair, tree removal, and snow removal.
  • Operate, maintain and perform the minor repair to light and heavy equipment (backhoe, loader, chainsaws, welders, etc.).
  • Perform routine inspection and preventive maintenance of assigned equipment and tools by cleaning and checking equipment and tools before and after use.
  • Report defects or needed repairs to the lead worker or supervisor.
  • Respond to various customer service requests and report findings to the lead worker or supervisor.
  • Maintain good public relations through courteous and prompt attention to customer complaints.
  • Develop and maintain cooperative and respectful work relationships with co-workers and supervisor.
  • Use utility locator service prior to any excavation.
  • Follow all safety rules and procedures.
  • Maintain work areas in a clean and orderly manner.
  • Complete daily work activities according to work schedules.
  • Measure, compute and convert English and metric systems.
  • Respond to after-hour emergencies within 30 minutes.
  • May assist other Public Works departments as needed.
  • Maintain proficiency by attending meetings and training, reviewing reports, and reading professional materials and journals.
  • May be asked to serve as a member of various employee and City committees. Report public hazards (potholes, fallen street signs, water leaks, etc.) to the lead worker or supervisor.
  • While performing the duties of this position, the employee is frequently required to sit, communicate, reach and manipulate objects, tools, or controls.
  • The position requires mobility.
  • Many duties are physically demanding requiring the movement of materials weighing 50 pounds, up to 90 pounds with assistance. Movement of materials weighing 25 to 50 pounds may consume up to 30% of the work period.
  • Duties require regular operation of light, medium and heavy equipment, use of hand tools, (jackhammer, chainsaw, weed eaters, shovels, etc.
  • Activity and types of duties performed require manual coordination and dexterity.
  • The majority of duties take place outside with exposure to all types of weather conditions and terrain on a year-round basis.
  • May be exposed to confined spaces and hazardous material including noise, fumes, chemicals, etc. The position is subject to emergency on-call response after normal work hours.
  • Works in the operation, repair, and maintenance of streets, water distribution systems, wastewater collection systems, and other duties as assigned. Inspect, repair, and maintain water distribution systems, storm drains, sewer collection systems, and sewer lift stations.
  • This position work in all aspects of the street maintenance department. Paving, patching, sign maintenance, concrete repair/installation, snow removal/sanding, etc.
  • Perform labor involved in the construction and maintenance of water distribution: install, repair, and read water meters; exercise valves; install and repair water lines, standpipes, valves, pumps, etc.; and perform water shut-offs and turn-ons; repair and install manholes, cleanouts; and clean debris from catch basins.
  • Produce a variety of records and reports relating to these activities. Operate, maintain and perform minor repairs to light and heavy equipment (backhoe, loader, sewer cleaner, welders, etc.). Perform routine inspection and preventive maintenance of assigned equipment and tools by cleaning and checking equipment and tools before and after use.   • On-call is required for this position, be able to respond to after-hours emergencies within a reasonable time. Respond to various customer service requests and report findings to the lead worker or supervisor. Maintain good public relations through courteous and prompt attention to customer complaints.
