We are seeking a smart, motivated, ambitious reporter to join our award-winning watchdog journalism team as an entry-level Data Reporter at FLORIDA TODAY in Brevard County, FL.
Working with other reporters, and on your own, you'll be doing research, digging into numbers and reports to find and put together stories that hold the powerful accountable and show how government actions impact peoples lives.
This is an entry-level position but the ideal candidate will have some familiarity with tools of data analysis, such as Python, database management systems (maybe SQL Server or PostgreSQL), statistics software (R), Microsoft Access, Microsoft Excel, visualization tools, etc. Knowledge of mapping software like ArcView GIS is a huge plus. We know there are great candidates who won't fit everything we've described, or who have important skills we haven't thought of. When in doubt, apply.
You'll be joining a team of talented and ambitious journalists who live and work on the Space Coast. FLORIDA TODAY is part of the USA TODAY Network, which offers opportunities for statewide projects and career advancement.
As the data reporter you will focus your efforts trying to wrangle data, including FOIA'ing, making and following up on Public Record Requests, scraping government sites, and once you get it, cleaning it, analyzing it and turning your reporting into prose.
But you wont just have your head buried in reports and computer files. Youll be following up with people, making phone calls, conducting interviews, knocking on doors and doing on-the-ground reporting. From time to time, youll also be thrown into breaking news stories, so life will never be dull.
Be prepared to work with fellow reporters on data brainstorming and analysis. Eventually, as you grow, we hope that you can teach and encourage best practices and newsroom data policies.
A bachelor's degree is required. A degree in journalism or a quantitative field is a plus.
This position is full-time with benefits and you'll be based in our office in Rockledge on Floridas Space Coast, where beach trips and rocket launches are part of our communitys daily life. We're surrounded by water and beautiful parks. The communities that make up the Space Coast are growing and we're a short drive from Orlando.
Please include a cover letter to tell us why youre right for this job.
We are dedicated to improving our newsroom, in part by better reflecting the people we cover. We are committed to diversity and building an inclusive environment for people of all backgrounds.
